MS Bike Tour celebrates 18th anniversary
EXETER — The 18th anniversary
of the RONA MS Bike Tour — Grand
Bend to London marks a decade of
participation for cyclist Jean
Vanderlaan who has continued to
ride to help raise money for multiple
sclerosis research and to assist
those already afflicted with the dis-
ease.
This year's race takes place July
26-27.
In July 1998 Vanderlaan commit-
ted herself to cycling the 160 kilo-
metre round trip from Grand Bend
to London in support of a close
friend who was diagnosed with mul-
tiple sclerosis. She attributes her
continuous commitment to the tour
to the organization on the part of
the Multiple Sclerosis Society and to
the overall comradery of the week-
end.
"You can't help but get involved.
It's well organized, fun and enjoy-
able."
Like many of the RONA MS Bike
Tour participants, Vanderlaan's
dedication to curing multiple sclero-
sis motivates her persistent
fundraising efforts. This year she
hopes to raise $2,000, and she
shares words of encouragement to
those nervous about fundraising
and cycling the distance.
"MS effects so many Canadians, so
don't be hesitant to ask all your con-
tacts for support; ask your mechan-
ic, your postal carrier — everyone!
Explain what you're doing and let
them (the potential sponsors) choose
if they want to sponsor. When it
comes to the cycling — get out
there; ride as much as possible."
When asked what her favorite
part of the tour weekend is, aside
from the cycling, Vanderlaan jokes
that she was quite partial to sleep-
ing — but in seriousness, the fellow-
ship of the participants and the
social time the tour weekend offers
is something she looks forward to
each year. Looking back at past
tours Vanderlaan's bubbly personal-
ity and good humour surfaced many
fond memories, most of them
humorous.

Raising over $860,000 in 2007,
the RONA MS Bike Tour — Grand
Bend to London is the largest single
fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis
Society in Southwestern Ontario and
is the largest RONA MS Bike Tour in
all of Ontario. In addition to funding
research, the MS Society provides
services for people who have MS as
well as family members, caregivers,
and health care professionals.
Multiple sclerosis is an unpre-
dictable and often disabling disease
of the central nervous system.
Canada has one of the highest rates
of MS, a disease for which the cause
and the cure are currently
unknown. Common symptoms are
extreme fatigue, vision and balance
problems. Symptoms can range
from subtle nerve sensations to
severe pain, and possibly severe
paralysis.

sclerosis and the MS Bike tour can

Lemon Herb Chicken
I HAVEN'T RUN MY NORMAL MARINADE RECIPES THIS SUMMER
AS I FIGURE THOSE THAT FOLLOW THE COLUMN HAVE SEEN
MY FAVORITE MARINADE AT LEAST FOUR YEARS NOW!
INSTEAD I THOUGHT I WOULD OFFER UP A GREAT RECIPE
FOR CHICKEN THAT I HAVE LEARNED TO MAKE ESPECIALLY
FOR OUR DAUGHTER FAITH -ANNE. SHE IS A CHICKEN AND
LEMON FANATIC AND LOVES TO HAVE CHICKEN COOKED
THIS WAY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO HAMBURGERS AND
SAUSAGE WHICH SHE DOESN'T EAT! BE SURE TO TRY LOTS
OF DIFFERENT FRESH HERBS IF YOU GROW THEM—THEY
REALLY ENHANCE THE FLAVOR.
Thawed skinless, boneless chicken breasts
I sliced lemon for every three breasts
I garlic clove chopped for every three breasts
Fresh thyme
Black pepper
Wrap Up the chicken with the lemon and seasonings in tinfoil.
Double wrap and place on the BBQ and cook for 30-40
minutes till fully cooked through. You can open them up and
lightly braise them at this point or put them right onto a
serving platter. Great and lemony. Leftovers make a nice slice
of cold chicken the next day!
