Children of Chernobyl return to Huron
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HURON — One of the official signs of summer in
Huron County for the past 10 years has been the
arrival of children from Chernobyl who will
spend six weeks in Canada having fun,
receiving free dental care and allowing their
bodies to heal from the effects of the 1986
Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Huron County for Children of Chernobyl is
hosting 15 children this summer from the
Gomel region of Belarus. The children and
their host families got together Friday night at
Gascho Pond west of Zurich for a barbecue and
a chance to socialize.

said the children, aged between nine and 16 plus their
interpreter will stay in Canada until Aug. 2. Host fami-
lies are found throughout Huron County and
even beyond in places like Kincardine and
Lucknow.
t The annual visit to Canada allows the
re children to eat healthy food, build up
their immune systems and get some

and skate, swim and bowl in Goderich.
Waun said the Chernobyl children blend in so well
when they arrive in Canada that it's often difficult to
tell them apart from Canadian children. She adds she's
seeing more retired people taking part in the program
and getting their grandchildren involved.
Last Friday was also a chance for the Retired
Teachers of Ontario to present a $4,000 `Service to
Others' grant for Huron County for Children of
Chernobyl.

POLICE BRIEFS
'Three teens held after
sexual assault and robbery
GRAND BEND — Three London teens, two age 17 and
one age 18 were held for bail after their involvement in
an alleged sexual assault on a store clerk and robbery of
the same woman. Several pedestrians in the area at the
time assisted in apprehending those responsible. It is
alleged that on June 15 around 7 p.m., three males
entered into a store on Main Street in Grand Bend. It
appeared that the trio, allegedly working together were
attempting to distract the lone female clerk while the
others commit thefts. One of the males, on two occa-
sions is alleged to have deliberately grabbed hold of the
female clerk and pressed his body against her in an
inappropriate manner. She was able to push him away.
Commotion was then made at the rear of the store caus-
ing the clerk to run and investigate. As she did, the third
male opened the cash register and grabbed a large
quantity of bills from the till. The clerk ran to the sus-
pect and grabbed his arm. The teen resisted her in
attempt to keep the cash. The clerk wrestled with the
suspect and was able to eventually retrieve the money.
They were ordered from the store and OPP were noti-
fied of the incident. Although the 19 -year-old clerk was
not physically harmed, the incident traumatized the
woman. With assistance from pedestrians on the street,
one was arrested immediately, while the other two sus-
pects fled. One was found by witnesses hiding under a
vehicle and the second suspect was pointed out by wit-
nesses as he walked along Main Street. They face
charges of sexual assault, robbery and flight from
Police.
