New coach for Irish
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish didn't have to look
far for a new coach this
summer with the hiring of
Russ Morningstar, who
was the coach of the West
Lorne Lakers last season
before they folded recent-
ly.
Morningstar said he has
a handle on the situation
in Lucan and that the
team is looking to bring
back 10 or 11 players for
next season.
"I've got a pretty good
grasp on which way we're
going to go with the team
and what we're looking
for."
Morningstar said he
likes a defensive minded
team and doesn't want to
be playing 8-7 style
games.
"You'd rather keep them
4-2 or 5-3 type victories."
Morningstar has experi-
ence coaching several dif-
ferent teams at different
levels, including Port
Stanley, Strathroy and
West Lorne.
While he said he wasn't
sure what his plans were
after West Lorne folded,
Morningstar said after
Lucan called and he met
with the team manage-
ment, "It was pretty much
a sure thing after I met
with them and saw what
kind of individuals they
are."
Morningstar said the
Irish are looking solid
with the addition of Josh
Suhanji, who was in West
Lorne last year and has
Junior B experience,
while returning to the
Lucan blueline are Alex
Regan and Adam
Hartman.
"So we have three of the
top defencemen in the
league," said Morningstar.
Behind the bench with
Morningstar will be assis-
tants' Joe Pearson, who
was also with West Lorne
last season and will look
after the defence while
Jason Smith will be the
offensive assistant coach.
"I'm still trying to get to
know the players from
last year and obviously
recruit some new ones for
this year," said
Morningstar.

Crediton Cubs split two league games
CREDITON - The
Crediton Cubs jr./mt. fast -
ball team split two more
league games this past
week. Crediton mercied
the Oneida Dreamcatchers
12-0 and lost to Byron Int.
by a score of 8-3.
Crediton 12 versus
Oneida
Dreamcatchers 0
Crediton's bats were on
fire against Oneida
Dreamcatchers even fac-
ing a very strong pitcher.
The pitcher's changeup
seemed to cause some
batters problems
but every Crediton
player ended up
with a base hit.
Kathy Glen was
superb at the plate
going for the
`cycle' pounding
out a homerun,
triple, double and
a single. Kerri
Fulton pounded
out two long dou-
bles along with a single hit
and Kendra Craig went
three for three at the plate
with three singles.
Kelli Fulton
placed down a
bunt and added a
double while
Mary Glen added
a home run in the
fifth inning to
clear the bases.
Ange Gould
pounded out a
double in the sev-
enth along with
singles from Nikki
Cyr, Marianne Scott and
Carrie Dixon.
Dixon pitched strongly
Kath
y Glen
for Crediton notching
three strikeouts with relief
from Scott.
Crediton 3 versus
Byron 8
It was a fast -paced game
against the strong Byron
Int. team recently.
Crediton stayed tied with
its opponents until the fifth
inning when Byron inched
ahead two runs but closed
the door in the sixth with
four more.
The Cubs replied in the
sixth with a run but a
three -up, three -down sev-
enth inning meant
the loss for the
local squad.
Only four
Crediton batters
successfully hit to
reach base. Kathy
Glen pounded out
two doubles and a
single, Ange
Gould a triple and
double, Marianne
Scott a double
and single and Kelli Fulton
a double and a perfect
bunt.
Scott pitched for
Crediton with
relief from Glen.
Strong fielding
by Gould, Glen
and Natalie
Laporte helped
keep Byron's run-
ners honest.
Plays by short
stop Kerri Fulton
and third base
Kelli Fulton also
notched a lot of
outs for the Cubs.
