Express win three games
EXETER — Newcomer
Brian McLeod has patiently
waited for his chance to pitch
more regularly for the Exeter
Express, says Express
spokeperson Joe Fulop
Sunday was McLeod's day
and he came through with a
shutout victory over Strathroy
9-0.
The win followed Express
victories earlier in the week
over the Lakeside Lizards and
London Bulls.
McLeod struck out five and
allowed six hits during the
contest against Strathroy.
The Express were able to
gain runs easily as they
pounded out 14 hits.
Justin Hayter led the team
with four hits while Nate
Burns had three and Bobbie
Grant and Vic Oliveira had
two each.
The last hits came from the
bats of Lonnie Hawke, Tim
Eifert and Rob Burk.
With the victory the team
moved into second place with
an 8-2 record. Lakeside leads
the league with a 9-2 record.
The Express extended their
winning streak to five games
as they defeated London 12-6
on June 24 and Lakeside 4-1
on June 27.
The Bulls have always been
a team loaded with good hit-
ters, said Fulop.
Dan Masse was given the
Express pitching assignment
and came through the experi-
ence a winner.
He was able to check the
Bulls' bats even though they
had 13 hits during the game.
Masse struck out three
London batters.
The Express replied with 12
runs on 19 hits.
In the first inning the
Express struck for five runs.
Aaron Patterson singled and
stole second.
The rally continued as
Burns singled, Grant walked,
and Chris Gosnell singled to
drive in a run.
Hawke then drove in two
runs with a single and Adam
Leppington doubled to score
two more runs.
The Bulls responded with
three runs on four hits.
The Express were able to
add single runs in the second,
third, fourth, sixth and ninth
innings plus three more in the
fourth.
The Bulls added two in their
fifth and one in the eighth.
Hitting stars in the game
with three hits each were
Gosnell and Hawke.
Burns, Grant, Dan Masse
and Terry Hogg chipped in
with two hits each while
Patterson had one.
Friday's game against
Lakeside featured good pitch-
ing, a solid defense and criti-
cal hits, said Fulop.
Derek Masse pitched anoth-
er gem as he held the
Lakeside hitters to only one
run on four hits while striking
out 12 Lakeside hitters.
Coach Doug Fairbairn
described the effort as the
best of the year.
The Express scored a run in
the first as Leppington
walked, stole second base and
was driven in by Burns.
Lakeside replied with a run
in the fifth on four hits.
Exeter broke the tie in the
10th scoring three runs with
hits from the bats of
Leppington, Grant, Burns
and Hayter.
The best hitters of the day
were Grant and Burns with
three while Leppington had
two.
The Express are proving to
be a good team and more will
be learned at the up coming
tournament in Lakeside, said
Fulop.
The Lakeside tournament
has nine teams. Fulop said all
of them were in a higher cate-
gory than were the Express
last year and Exeter will
have its work cut out for it.
Crediton Cubs win consolation prize
INNERKIP - The Crediton
Cubs jrAnt. fastball team was
consolation winners recently
at the Woodstock ladies fast -
ball tourney.
The Cubs found themselves
in a tough pool for regulation
play. In fact, all four teams in
Crediton's pool were winners
in all four playoff divisions.
Crediton 0 versus
London Rebels 9
Crediton's bats didn't seem
to show themselves during
Saturday's play of the tourney.
The Cubs' defensive prowess
was quite evident all day but
their offence struggled.
Megan Preszcator and Carie
Pertschy were the only batters
for Crediton each notching
singles.
Marianne Scott pitched for
Crediton with relief from
Kathy Glen.
Catcher Mary Glen was the
game's MVP player.
Crediton 5 versus Mike's
4
A four -run sixth inning was
the key to Crediton success.
Trailing four to 1 in the fifth
inning, Crediton took the win
after four base on balls and
three single hits.
Julie Prout recorded three
singles for Crediton with sin-
gle hits from Sarah Green and
Kerri Fulton.
Missy Pertschy and Kathy
Glen were voted as the game's
most valuable players.
Kathy Glen pitched for
Crediton with relief from
Sarah Green.
Crediton 0 versus
Chepstow I2
The score does not display
the fast -paced game against
Chepstow. A 0-0 tie until the
fourth when Chepstow scored
three runs, remained very
close until the sixth when
Chepstow scored nine more
runs.
Again Crediton's bats were
exceptionally quiet with only
Sarah Green reaching first on
a single hit.
Sarah Green pitched for
Crediton and was also the
MVP of the game.
Crediton I versus Mike's
5
Meeting the same team in
pool play as in quarter -finals
was disappointing for Crediton
but this time the Cubs' oppo-
nents took the win.
Crediton remained scoreless
until the seventh inning but
the rally was too late to take a
win.
Marianne Scott led her team
at the plate with two triples
while Ange Gould and Sarah
Green added two single hits
apiece. Single hits came from
the bats of Kathy Glen, Megan
Preszcator and Mary Glen.
The MVP for game was
Marianne Scott.
Crediton 13 versus
Northern Lites 0
Sunday playoff games were
a totally different story for
Crediton as the bats were
again on fire. Crediton scored
twelve runs in the first inning
during its semi-final game and
added another one in the
fourth.
Kerri Fulton led her team
with a double and two singles,
Nikki Cyr pounded out a triple
and added a single hit while
Kathy Glen, Marianne Scott
and Sarah Green each added
a double and single.
Megan Preszcator added two
singles, with a double from
the bat of Carie Pertschy and
single hits from Ange Gould
and Kelli Fulton.
Scott notched two strikeouts
for Crediton with relief from
Sarah Green.
Crediton 3 versus
Oxford Plumbing 0
Even with a lightning sus-
pension and a rain cancella-
tion, Crediton still managed to
maintain its lead and defeat
its opponent for the win in the
championship game.
The Cubs jumped on the
scoreboard in the first inning
after Kathy Glen scored from
Sarah Green's and Kerri
Fulton's single hits.
Glen added a double in the
second but was left stranded.
In the top of the fourth
inning, the game was sus-
pended due to lightning and
when the game was allowed
to start again, Crediton
remained in its superior mode
scoring two more runs in the
sixth inning with singles from
Sarah Green, Kerri Fulton,
Missy Pertschy and Kelli
Fulton. After a downpour, the
game was called and Crediton
was awarded the prize
money.
Special thanks go to Sarah
Green and Missy Pertschy for
their expertise and get well
wishes to Julie Prout after her
injuries.

Fury blanked 4-0
EXETER — The
Exeter Fury traveled
to London Saturday
to play against Gols
and came away
empty-handed on the
short end of a 4-0
score.
Playing with several
of their regulars miss-
ing, Exeter relied on
several locals to assist
them in fielding a
team.
Exeter played the
home squad evenly
for the first 20 min-
utes, but a nagging
hamstring injury sat
down Joe Forrester
for the remainder of
the game.
When he left the
field, players began
playing unfamiliar
positions, which led to
a breakdown defen-
sively.
Gols got on the
board shortly there-
after when two slide -
tackles were missed.
Keeper Ryan Masse
made the initial save,
but Gols there to
score on the rebound
to make it 1-0 at the
half.
In the second half,
Exeter came out with
more energy and
nearly capitalized
when Dylan Fidler
headed a cross from
Nick Williams off the
crossbar.
Gols came back to
make it 2-0 on a chip
play that Masse had
no chance on.
They made it 3-0 on
a questionable offside
non -call and scored
another late in the
half to seal the deal.
Shawn McFalls had
one last chance, but
his headball off a
cross from Corey
Firth sailed over the
net.
Exeter plays at
home at 8:30 p.m.
versus league -leading
Middlesex tonight
(Wednesday) and see
Cup action at home,
also at 8:30 p.m. on
