South Huron Hospital unveils new ER department
Continued from front page
"We rely on this hospital so much," he said.
North Middlesex Mayor Wes Hodgson said residents
of his municipality use two hospitals — South Huron
and Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital. As someone
who worked in Exeter for 38 years, Hodgson said he
followed closely the progress of the campaign.
"Keep up the good work," he said.
George Godbolt of the campaign team spoke of his
initial doubts that so much money could be raised, but
said the findings of a consultant informed the hospital
that the hospital is very important to residents and
they were willing to donate to keep it vital.
"The support is very widespread," Godbolt said, pay-
ing credit to Gary Bean for donating $100,000 to kick
off the fundraising campaign, and noting the Exeter
Lions' donation of $35,000 and their door-to-door
efforts to inform people what the campaign was about.
Hospital board chairperson John Hanson thanked
Mitchell for being "a great friend" of the hospital and
added the hospital made "a great pick" three years ago
when it hired Deb Hunt as CEO.
"This is a very special day for our auxiliary," South
Huron Hospital Auxiliary president Elaine Skinner
said, adding the auxiliary has given over $1 million to
the hospital over the years.
She said the auxiliary is pleased to move into its new
gift shop and congratulated all those responsible for
the renovations.
Chief of staff Dr. Ming Lam said the new ER "is an
excellent example of what we can do as a community."
She thanked the nurses and support staff for working
through the inconveniences caused by the renovations.
Hospital Foundation member Chuck Erb said the
Foundation will continue to serve the hospital and help
maintain a state of the art facility.

Eleven -year-old Emily Hayter raised $250 for the
campaign and said she learned how good it feels to
help others. She added the hospital's logo, "The little
hospital that does," reminds her of "the little engine
that could," and she was proud to be a part of the pro-
ject.
"Emily stole my heart," Hunt said. Calling Monday an
extraordinary and memorable day, Hunt thanked
provincial, federal and municipal politicians for their
support of the hospital and said the project wouldn't
have happened without the dedication and enthusiasm
Lions Club playground dedicated
of hospital staff, particularly operations manager Lisa
Campbell and clinical resource nurse Brenda Palsa.
Hunt added the hospital didn't receive any com-
plaints from patients or their families during the reno-
vations. She paid particular thanks to project leader
Don Smith of Ellis Don. Smith owns a cottage in Grand
Bend and when he heard about the project decided to
get involved.
"You've got a marvelous hospital and you're to be
congratulated," he said.
Hives damaged at Ferguson Apiaries
EXETER — A bear that has been sighted several times in Huron
County may have moved south towards Exeter, after damage was
reported at a bee yard three miles outside of Exeter.
Bill Ferguson, owner of Ferguson Apiaries, said the damage to its yard
was noticed on Friday.
Ferguson said four beehives were hauled into the bush and there is
around $400 damage.
"They leave particular paths through the bush. They pull the frames
out and haul them all over. They're trying to eat the bees more than the
honey...they're after the protein."
It is the first problem Ferguson said he has had with bears. The last
reported sighting of a bear in the Exeter area, according to Ferguson
was 60 years ago.
"Once they get used to coming in, you can't even keep them out with
electric fence," says Ferguson. "They know what is on the other side and
they're willing to suffer for it."

ZURICH — The Zurich Lions helped out the
Municipality of Bluewater as well as local
children with a donation of $5,000 to the
municipality on Saturday at the dedication
for the Lions Club playground.
The playground was installed last summer
and Lions president Mark Tucker said there
were many people to thank for the construc-
tion of the playground and for supporting the
Lions' events.
"Lions serve the community and we're
pleased to give back," said Tucker.
Tucker added a park bench will be
installed soon at the playground in memory
of past Zurich Lion members.
Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson thanked the
Lions, saying the community wouldn't be as
well off without the Lions and that not many
communities the size of Zurich can support a
group such as the local Lions .
