Stan Lee Club remembers
By Joan Beierling
VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA - Stan Lee Club
met in the complex on
June 4 beginning with a
pot -luck supper. Twenty-
four members were pre-
sent including four guests.
President Charles Reid
conducted the business.
Their first thoughts were
in remembering Elmer
Hayter who passed away
May 28, 2008. He
became the president of
the club when it was
formed in January 1984.
Members came from the
Varna Brucefield area.
The club was able to
receive a New Horizons
Grant of $11,000. With
this money the seniors
were able to provide many
things for the complex, the
piano, 100 chairs, room
dividers, shuffleboard
equipment, stereo equip-
ment, 360 place settings of
dishes and bowls, 25 card
tables and dish carts. This
money stretched a lot fur-
ther than it would today!!
Elmer and Norene
Hayter seldom if ever
missed a meeting and they
came to shuffle until they
just couldn't shuffle any-
more! Elmer took a term
as president of Zone 8.
Shortly before Elmers
death, Norene Hayter took
up residence at Huronview
and she would appreciate
visits from cub members.
Convention in
August
Secretary Anna Keys
and treasurer Bill Taylor
gave their reports.
Charles Reid will be
attending the U.S.C.O.
Convention in August. A
resolution from the Stan
Lee Club will be brought
forth asking that
Government Grants be
made available to upgrade
rural area septic systems.
The Club voted to pay reg-
istration for Bernice to go
with Charles and repre-
sent Stan Lee.
A donation will be sent
to the U.S.C.O. Building
Fund in memory of Elmer
Hayter and also to the
Canadian Diabetic Society.
Entertainment was provid-
ed by Glen and Marlene
Deichert along with guests
Gwen O'Rourke from
Vanastra and Geo Lec
from Ailsa Craig.
Everyone enjoyed their
music.
The next meeting will be
Sept. 10 at the complex
beginning with a pot luck
supper at 6 p.m.
