(photos/Nina Van Lieshout) Zurich Mennonite Church celebrates 100 years By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH CORRESPONDENT ZURICH - Playground dedi- cation Sat., June 21 at 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to the Lions Club playground dedica- tion ceremony that will be held at the park in celebration of the newly installed equipment. The Lions will also be making their second donation to the municipality for this project. The Zurich Agriculture Society will have their meeting for the Fair this Thurs., June 19 at the town hall at 8 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come out. Jaclyn Rader returned home recently from being away for the past three months back- packing around southeast Asia going to such places as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Jaclyn trav- elled with a group for two months then alone for one month. She was gone from Feb. 26 to May 25 and is the daughter of Brenda and Jerry Rader of Zurich. While in Singapore, Jaclyn stayed with her friend Keriann O'Rourke who is the daughter of Gwen and Pat O'Rourke from the Mt. Carmel area. Father Peter Poel is away on holidays for a month going to Assisi with some members of his family and to other places as well by himself. Father Greg Blonde led mass in Grand Bend on Sunday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Following mass cake and refreshments were served in the parish hall in celebra- tion of Fr. Blonde's 70th birth- day. Close to $500 was donated towards the purchase of the Zurich Health Centre building recently through a fundraiser held by Jerry Rader and staff. A beautiful wedding was had by Sean Sweeney and Laura Bove on Saturday at St. Peter's Cathedral in London with din- ner and reception held at the Riverbend Golf and Country Club. Sean is the son of Jim and Carole Sweeney of London. Lions Club The Lions Club had their last meeting for the summer at Erb's Restaurant on June 11 along with their spouses for a dinner and social gathering (23 in attendance). An induction ceremony for two new members Ian Wood and Bruce MacMillan was held by P.D.G. Jim Ryan. The Lions will be busy with the Elimination Draw and Dance at the Fair on Fri., July 25 along with the Bean Festival coming up soon on Sat., Aug. 23. The next meeting will be on the fourth Wednesday in September. Mary Mae Wushke of Moosonmin Saskatchewan has spent the past six weeks visit- ing friends and relatives: Her son Geoff and family in Exeter; as well as her two sisters Thelma Thiel and Leona Reichert, and brother Truman Fischer all residing at the Bluewater Rest Home. Fr. Gary Ducharme from the Retreat House in Oxley (near Leamington) spent Father's Day Sunday with his parents Gerard and Mary Ducharme of Zurich along with other family members. Zurich Mennonite Church Reminder: Vacation Bible School will be held at the Zurich Mennonite Church Mon., July 7 - Fri., July 11. There will be a meeting for all the volunteers who will be helping with Vacation Bible School on Tues., June 24 at the Mennonite Church hall at 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in having your child attend this year's session and it's their first time please call Sandra Regier at 236-7599 for more information. The Zurich Mennonite Church are having their Centennial Celebrations "Home - Coming 100th Anniversary Weekend" from June 20 - June 22. For more information or to register call the office at 236-4933. Congratulations to Carrie and Dave Hohner, Zurich on the arrival of their baby boy Landon David Jackson who was born on May 9. Congratulations also Becky and Jamie Beal, RR 1 Hensall on the arrival of their son Emerson born on June 5. David and Marie Gelinas and Randy and Vicki Geoffrey are happy to announce the arrival of their granddaughter Makayla Evelyn born on June 9 to Alicia and Jason who live in Kitchener. Jerome Sweeney spent the past five days at the International Eucharistic Congress Celebration held in Quebec City. He travelled by bus from London with a group of friends. An engagement party was held for Peter Lansbergen and Pam Tremblay on Sat., June 14 at the complex in Zurich. Peter is the son of Tony and Jane Lansbergen of Zurich. The couple are planning to be married in September. ZMAA It is time to register to play hockey for the '08 -'09 winter season for the Zurich Minor Athletic Association. If you missed registration last Saturday call Jamie Brand at 237-3889 as soon as possible to get on a team! The Tri -Co Senior Games are over for this season and Zurich brought home the sil- ver trophy for "A Division". Twenty-seven people from Zurich attended the awards banquet at the Exeter Legion. Several people will advance to Actifest in London Aug. 12 - 14. Thanks to everyone who participated you were all great sports! POLICE BRIEFS Thrown beer bottle leads to charges GRAND BEND — Lambton OPP officers were patrolling the main beach area in Grand Bend June 9. It is alleged that an officer noticed a 17 -year-old male standing by a vehicle with a beer in his hand. When the male noticed police, he threw the beer under his car. The officer approached and spoke with the male and noticed a quantity of suspected marijuana in plain view inside the male's vehicle. The offi- cer arrested the male and during a subsequent search of the vehicle, the officer found as many as 100 tablets of suspected ecstasy. The 17 -year-old from Woodstock will appear in Sarnia Court July 24 to answer to the charges of posses- sion of a controlled substance. Another speeder loses car and licence SOUTH HURON — On June 6 an eastbound motorist traveled into the radar beam of a westbound OPP cruiser on Dashwood Road in South Huron. The driver was trav- eling above the posted speed limit at 169 kilometres per hour. The officer locked in the speed, stopped the driver and charged the driver. An 18 -year-old Waterloo man had his vehicle towed and his licence suspended for racing. He will appear in Goderich Court August 7 to answer to his charge.
