Learning more about calf
health and judging
By Raina Vingerhoeds
KIRKTON — The
Kirkton 4-H Dairy Club
has held its first two meet-
ings. The first meeting
was held at the Reijnen
farm on April 12. Our
leaders are Virginia
Warwick and Sandi Brock,
with help from Richard
Osbourne. Sandi intro-
duced the game Black and
White, a game played
so that the members
could meet each
other. Once names
were learned we
held elections for
the executive.
Brendan Shute is presi-
dent, Travis Jaques is vice
president, Kelcie Hunter is
secretary and Raina
Vingerhoeds is press
reporter.
The club was split into
two groups for the rest of
the meeting. The juniors
learned the parts of the
cow and what good con-
formation looks like. The
seniors were tested on
their knowledge of cow
parts and then learned
more about judging.
Calf health
The second meeting was
held at Kemmere Farm on
May 12. Brendan Shute
led the 4-H pledge. The
focus of the meeting
was calf health and
the roll call was to
name a sign of a
healthy calf or a
symptom of a sick
one.
Dr. Adam Haight of
the Kirkton Veterinary
clinic spoke about calving
and the health of calves.
The Kemmere's provided
a class of four cows for the
club to judge. After, we
split into two groups of
three teams, each for a
`jeopardy challenge.'

2008 Advance Payments Program
Federal Assistance to the Livestock Sector
Through the Advance Payments Program (APP), producers can get repayable cash advances to help
improve their cash-flow.
As part of a national action plan to help hog and cattle producers, improvements have been made to
the APP for 2008 to give livestock producers easier access to cash advances, including:
• Removing the requirement for livestock producers to use a Business Risk Management (BRM)
program as security for a cash advance and allowing producers to use only inventory as security.
Producers are still required to participate in an eligible BRM program to get a cash advance.
• Declaring that a state of severe economic hardship exists for the cattle and hog sectors so that
emergency advances of up to $400,000 are available to eligible producers for the 2008-09
production period.
To apply for the 2008 APP, contact a participating producer organization by visiting
agr.gc.ca/app or call 1-888-346-2511.
