Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Times—Advocate 11 Queensway's volunteer auxiliary enhances programs HENSALL — Fun and fitness with Nicole started the week off for residents as they had a thorough workout with a range of motions exercises, thera- bands, balls and the para- chute. Following exercises singing and quizzes pro- vided a mental workout. Throughout the day resi- dents also benefited from the walking program, visi- tation and massage thera- py with Lori Burt, regis- tered massage therapist. Queensway's Volunteer Auxiliary met Tuesday morning to preview the month of June and share their availability for vari- ous programs. We are thankful for these hard- working, caring women who enhance the pro- grams at Queensway. Pastor Cathy Prout of Faith Tabernacle in Centralia led worship Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Belva Fuss as volunteer organist. Residents benefited from music therapy and drum- ming circle with Lisa Stewart Wednesday morning. Everyone in the dining room enjoyed the added bonus of Lisa's piano playing at lunch time. Manicures were the focus Thursday afternoon as several ladies soaked up the pampering of hand massages and fresh polish in the summer colours. The library and tuck cart saw business Friday afternoon as residents borrowed their favourite publications and returned others. In the evening Don Finkbeiner, Harvey Smith and Harold Mills made THE HOME OF THE WEEK HOME IMPROVEMENT SPECIALIST some beautiful music in the retirement home lounge and drew a good crowd of residents out to hear their favourite tunes. Staff, residents and vol- unteers want to thank everyone who patronized Queensway's corner at the Hensall Yard Sale. Everyone was pleased with the successful day. (photos/Nina Van Lieshout) Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello Quick test for fat content of foods: press the food against a napkin or paper towel. Those that leave a greasy mark usually contain a high fat content. Great way of testing muffins and cookies. We hear much about obesity in North America. In Europe, the people of Germany seem to rank as the fattest in that continent. With a diet higher in beer and sausages than in other countries and with 6O% of the population not doing any regular exercise, weight problems are expected. Edema is a swelling that occurs due to fluid escaping from the blood vessels and swelling the tissues between the cells. Its severity can be measured by pressing a finger firmly into the swelling. The imprint (or pit) left dictates the seriousness of the edema. Doctors are best at determining this. The words "pilling edema" derives from this. Some drugs can cause edema. Among the most common include over-the-counter drugs with ibuprofen. All pharmacies keep prescription records specific to the drugs your doctor prescribes for you. If you have any problems with adverse reactions to medications, tell your pharmacist. This information can be recorded on your file for future reference. r Ilt'il Huron Apothecary Ltd.
