4-H swine meeting focuses on barn building
By Shannon Ryan
WINTHROP - On Wed., May 28 we had our
second 4-H swine meeting at the Winthrop
church. Jesse opened the meeting with the 4-
H pledge. Then our secretary read the min-
utes from the last meeting. Our roll call of the
night was, "What are the main types of
swine barns?" The answer was nursing
barns, finishing facility and farrowing
stall and dry sow facility.
Barn building contest
Then the leaders told us about the barn
building contest. We all have the chance to
build a swine barn and it will be put into the
Seaforth fair. We then worked in our books
and read about how big the pig pen should be
and the different types of flooring.
We then talked about a whole bunch of
adventure camps or days going on throughout
the year.
At our next meeting we will be dis-
cussing temperature, humidity and
ventilation. A guest speaker is
coming in to talk to us about hous-
ing and the building of swine barns.
We ended the meeting with cookies
and juice. Our next meeting will be
Wed., June 18 at the Winthrop church.
