Express lose 9-7
EXETER — The Exeter Express vis-
ited the Lakeside Lizards and came
up on the short end of a 9-7 score.
Exeter spokesperson Joe Fulop said
the game featured two well coached
teams with quality pitching, good
defense and many base hits.
Fulop added on top of that was the
rain factor which caused mucky con-
ditions throughout the game.
Chris Gosnell pitched his third
straight game. for the Express.
He had been the winner of the first
two games but on this night the
humid, slippery conditions were not
in his favour.
He allowed five runs on eight hits
over the first four innings. Only two of
the runs were earned and Gosnell
had five strikeouts.
The Express put three runs on the
board in the third inning.
The rally was started by hits from
Terry Hogg, Aaron Patterson and
Bobbie Grant, with walk to Nate
Burns and a double by Lonnie
Hawke.
The Express scored one more in the
fifth on a single and stolen base by
Adam Leppington and an RBI single
by Rob Burk.
Exeter took the lead in the seventh.
It started with a walk and stolen base
by Grant and a sacrifice fly by Hawke.
Burk scored on a single, an error
and a double by Gosnell
The final Express rally was in the
eighth as Patterson walked, stole
second, went to third on an error and
scored on a Grant single.
Newcomer Brian McLeod pitched
three scoreless innings. He allowed
one hit and had one strikeout.
The stage was set for closer Dan
Masse to keep the Lakeside team at
bay.
With Masse pitching in the rain and
gaining no calls from the umpire it
led to four Lakeside runs.
Masse had good velocity but needed
better conditions to pitch as he would
normally.
Burk and Hawke each had singles
to lead off the ninth but they were
stranded making the final score 9-7
in favour of Lakeside.
The offensive star was Burk with
four hits, while Grant and Burns were
on base three times each.
Fury defeat Ingersoll 4-1
EXETER — The Exeter Fury were
in Ingersoll Sunday and Fury
spokesman Jason McFalls said once
the Fury found the back of the net for
the first time in three games, the
goals started flowing.
Held off the scoreboard since the
opening minutes of the season the
Fury picked up three second -half
goals to pull away from the home
squad and defeat Ingersoll 4-1.
Exeter fell behind early on a penalty
shot due to a hand ball in the box.
It was nearly a two goal deficit but
the goal post robbed the Ingersoll
player from a potential strike on a
header a few minutes earlier.
Exeter began to gain chances with a
few good crosses and corner kicks
but was unable to knot things up until
Jon Nesbitt broke in down the right
side and fired a low shot past the
keeper.
Ingersoll scored a goal late in the
half but the play was incorrectly
whistled down due to an offside call
giving the visitors a fortunate break
heading into halftime.
The Fury came out and controlled
the play in the second half while
heading into the wind.
Nick Williams alone had a number
of excellent scoring chances including
a blast from in close that rang off the
crossbar after receiving a nice pass
from Masters call-up Tony Van
Mierlo.
Fury keeper Ryan Masse had to
make an acrobatic save to keep the
game tied.
Masse made the initial stop and
then with his back to the play man-
aged to block the rebound from close
range.
The Fury centre midfielders Tim
Hundey, Pete McAllister and Stu
Parsons did a good job handling the
ball and creating outlet passes for
their teammates.
Roger Mills received one of these
passes and took the ball up the left
side and chipped a long shot over the
keeper and into the far corner to give
Exeter a 2-1 lead.
The Fury continued to pick up scor-
ing opportunities with Dan Caslick
nearly finding the back of the net
after a passing play.
Williams finally ended his frustrat-
ing night by scoring on a long break-
away after blocking a pass near half.
With the score 3-1 the Fury defense
of Chris Hern, Shawn McFalls, Joe
Forrester and Tom Skinner shut
down the Ingersoll strikers by not
allowing any dangerous scoring
chances the rest of the game.
Parsons finished the scoring on the
last play of the game by firing a shot
off a defender and into the net to
make the final score 4-1.
"It was a good overall team effort
tonight," McFalls stated.
The Fury have a 2-2 record with
their next action tonight (Wednesday)
at 8:30 p.m. in Exeter against Delhi.
