Heart attack care at SHH
exceeds "gold standard"
By Scott Nixon

EXETER — Research done recently at South Huron Hospital shows
patients arriving at the hospital suffering from an acute heart attack are
receiving "very good and timely care," according to the doctor who led the
study.
Dr. Ken Milne said last week the "gold standard" for treating a patient
suffering a heart attack with a life-saving clot -busting drug is 30 minutes.
While studies have shown that this goal is not being met across Canada, a
study led by Milne last fall shows South Huron Hospital and Goderich's
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital are meeting and exceeding the
goal.
Milne will present the data at the Canadian Association of Emergency
Physicians Scientific Meeting in Ottawa June 10. The report will be pub-
lished in an upcoming edition of the Canadian Journal of Emergency
Medicine.
The study shows that the last 50 cases of heart attack patients receiving
clot -busting drugs at South Huron took an average of 25 minutes, with 64
per cent of them receiving the drug in less than 30 minutes. In 50 cases at
Alexandra Marine, the average was 30 minutes, with combined statistics
between the two rural hospitals of 27 minutes with 58 per cent of the
patients receiving the clot -busting drug in less than 30 minutes.
Data in previous studies showed a Canadian average time of 69 minutes,
more than double the goal. Milne said Ontario data from 1999-2000
showed rural hospitals were a bit better, but still at an average of more
than 40 minutes.
In an e-mail interview, Milne said the good results of the study didn't
surprise him.
"I knew we provided very good and timely care for heart attack patients.
Research presented last year in Victoria, B.C., demonstrated South Huron
Hospital exceeded the guidelines for the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale
timelines. Patients in cities often wait six to eight hours to be seen. In con-
trast, it would be very rare for patients at our rural hospital to wait even
half as long."
In explaining the results at South Huron and Alexandra Marine, Milne
said, "Less volume of patients means faster service. In addition, we have a
staff of great nurses and doctors working at these two hospitals."
Milne explained there are two ways to treat heart attacks — with clot -
