Canada reaches
livestock agreement
WASHINGTON -
Minister of
Agriculture and Agri -
Food and Minister for
the Canadian Wheat
Board Gerry Ritz,
announced recently
that Canada, the U.S.
and Mexico have
reached an agree-
ment harmonizing
North America to the
World Organization
for Animal Health's
(OIE) standards for
trade in bovine
breeding stock that
will also allow
Canadian cattle to be
shipped through the
U.S. to Mexico.
"The government of
Canada is committed
to working with our
neighbours in the
United States and
Mexico to secure
OIE-consistent trade
for beef and livestock
in North America and
around the world,"
said Ritz. "This
agreement is good
news for farmers in
all three countries
who will now have
access to world-class
livestock from any-
where in North
America."
This announcement
comes on the heels of
the minister's trip to
Washington to meet
with U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Ed Schafer.
Ritz and Schafer dis-
cussed issues and
objectives shared by
industry on both
sides of the border.
These included nor-
malizing beef and
cattle trade in North
America, the U.S.
Farm Bill legislation,
mandatory Country -
of -Origin Labelling
and market access
issues for potatoes.
"Canada and the
U.S. are each others'
most important trad-
ing partners and
farm families in both
countries benefit
from our close rela-
tionship," said Ritz.
"Our government is
committed to contin-
ue our productive
and respectful dia-
logue with our
American neighbours
for the benefit of
Canadians who
depend on our agri-
culture and agri-food
industries."
