New rubber floors for South Huron Rec Centre
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — New rubber flooring at South Huron Rec
Centre's dressing rooms and back hallway will make things a lit-
tle easier on the skates, as council approved the purchase of the
flooring from Gym -Con for $28,650.
The existing rubber floor is worn and needs to be replaced,
chief administrative officer Roy Hardy told council at its May 20
meeting.
In other news, council passed approval of the purchase of a
roadside mower from CG Equipment for $7,350. The municipali-
ty received four quotes from area companies on the new mower
and had budgeted $9,000.
Quotes ranged from a low of $7,050 (also from CG Equipment
to a high of $8,700. The municipality opted for the $7,350
option, a Lely HD 205, because it has a longer warranty than the
slightly cheaper Kvernland mower quoted. CG recommended the
Lely because it is a more heavy duty machine than the
Kvernland. Also, road manager Ken Bettles explained in his
report that the municipality is pleased with a Lely mower it
already has.
Council also approved the purchase of a riding mower from
Country Corners Rent -All for $8,600.
The municipality had requested quotes from three companies,
but only received the Country Corners price.

LUCAN BIDDULPH — Middlesex OPP Staff Sgt. Bill Watkins and
Const. Doug Graham presented the Lucan Biddulph 2007 Year
End Police Report before council Monday night.
False alarms were highlighted as a continuous problem through-
out the year.
In Lucan Biddulph there were 42 alarm calls "which were all
false," says Watkins.
"Each alarm needs two officers, two hours of time," adding that
when all the false alarms are added up, about two weeks of work-
ing hours were wasted.
"False alarms divert away from other things. It puts everyone in
jeopardy," says Watkins.
False alarms in Lucan Biddulph have raised from 37 calls in
2006 to 42 in 2007.
Watkins says false alarms are a prominent issue throughout
Middlesex County.
Robberies and arsons have increased from zero in 2006 to two
in 2007.
Traffic complaints have also risen, something Watkins says,
"Isn't necessarily a bad thing." There were 110 traffic complaints
in 2007, increasing by four calls from 2006.
Mischiefs are also "fairly high," with 33 calls, although that's a
decrease from 41 calls in 2006.
Watkins says impaired drivers are also "fairly high," rising from
two in 2006 to 10 in 2007. Watkins says added initiatives, like

that the shots were fired from a second storey window
across the street. An OPP cruiser passing by was
flagged down and the officers were advised what had
occurred. Officers immediately went to the apartment
where the shots were coming from and arrested the 20 -
year -old male. A pellet gun was seized. The male faces

increasing RIDE programs by the OPP have allowed police to have
a larger presence on the roads.
"Impaireds are slightly higher everywhere," says Watkins.
Break and enters have decreased from 26 in 2006 to 16 in 2007,
while thefts have increased slightly from 38 in 2006 to 39 in 2007.
Assaults have remained steady at nine from 2006 to 2007.
Watkins says "drugs are up," explaining "they are at the highest
of any previous years."
Watkins says the rise from eight in 2006 to 20 in 2007 can be
attributed to added OPP initiatives, explaining he doesn't think the
increase is "necessarily a bad thing."
Watkins says he expects 2008 "will be much higher."
Watkins touched briefly on a few Middlesex County accomplish-
ments, explaining the December Festive RIDE program was a suc-
cess.
"The goal was 8,500 vehicle checks," says Watkins, which was
surpassed by 16 per cent, with a total of 9,872 vehicles checked.
The policing cost in 2007 for Lucan Biddulph was $389,070.
