Communities in Bloom
Zinnia
About a month ago in your Weekender, 2000 poeple living in Exeter
recieved a package of Zinnia seeds along with a Communties in Bloom
Brochure. If you have not already done so, now would
be and excellent time to plant your seeds somewhere in
your garden or pots.
No flowers are easier to grow than Zinnias; just plant commas nes
stand back and watch them grow into cheerful, brilliant- "I'm catkins
ly coloured blooms prefect for cutting.
Choose a site in full sun (6 hours), although $e/pa rt of RI
Zinnias appreciate a little afternoon shade especial-
ly on those hot days of summer Zinnias like rich, well drained soil.
Seeds can be sown directly in the soil 1/4 inch deep and a few inches
apart. Thin to 6 to 12 inches, depending on variety's mature height.
Those you recieved are the giant variety and should be thinned to 12
inches apart.
Keep soil somewhat moist, mulching is a good idea. Zinnias can survive
in soil that's on the dry side but will wilt in very dry conditions.
Trim faded flowers, or cut flowers often to enjoy indoors, to promote
longer blooming.
