Avon Maitland hires new director
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
ST. MARYS — An associate director of
the Hamilton Wentworth District School
Board has been chosen to replace Geoff
Williams as education director with the
Avon Maitland District School Board.
Charles "Chuck" Reid, whose wife
Suzanne has family roots in Wingham,
moves from the number -two job at one
of the province's largest school boards
— slightly less than 50,000 students —
to the top job at a largely rural board
with just 19,000 students.
However, after being introduced at a
board meeting May 13, Reid expressed
his excitement with taking on new chal-
lenges once Williams officially retires
Charles
Reid
Aug. 1.
"I want to deepen
the achievement agen-
da," Reid told the
media after noting the
Avon Maitland board
already has a strong
record in many stu-
dent success determi-
nants.
"There's recognition
that there's a glass
ceiling across the
province in terms of student achieve-
ment, and I'm hoping that, if we can dif-
ferentiate some of our approaches we
can maybe start to break through that
ceiling."

Annex closing
Exeter office
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Annex Publishing and Printing is closing
its Exeter office, effective June 30.
Vice-president and publisher Diane Kleer confirmed
with the Times -Advocate last Friday that the Simcoe-
based publishing company is closing its Exeter location
on Thames Road West. Four employees in the circula-
tion and production departments will lose their jobs.
Several trade magazines are published out of the
Exeter location, such as Top Crop Manager (west and
east publications), Canadian Rental Service, Glass
Canada, Ground Water Canada, Drainage Contractor
and Potatoes in Canada. Those magazines will move to
Simcoe, Kleer said, adding the remaining employees
will either also move to Simcoe or work out of their
homes. The Exeter office has 11 employees.
"It's a business decision based on volume," Kleer
said, adding it makes more business sense to run the
magazines out of Simcoe.
Annex leases its Thames Road office, so Kleer said
she isn't sure what the future will hold for the build-
ing.
Annex bought its Exeter location, then called AIS
Communications Limited, in 2004, from partners Peter
Phillips and Peter Darbishire, who had owned AIS
since 1981.
According to the Annex website, Top Crop Manager
has the highest circulation of the magazines produced.
out of the Exeter office. Its western publication has a
circulation of 29,162, while the eastern Top Crop
Manager has a circulation of 22,828.
