Express looking strong
EXETER — The Exeter
Express kicked off the new
season with a hard fought vic-
tory over Forest Friday night.
Team spokesperson Joe
Fulop said the 7-1 final score
is misleading as the game was
1-0 until the eighth inning
when Exeter rallied for three
runs.
The Express completed their
scoring with three more in the
ninth inning.
Fulop said manager Doug
Fairbairn appears to have a
team that will be stronger
than the ones which won the
O.B.A. 'D' championship in
each of the last two years.
Fulop provided a look at this
year's team.
"This squad has been able
to keep the best players from
last year's team and add play-
ers who will certainly help in
their quest of the league and
O.B..A. 'C' championship," he
said.
"The entire infield has
returned ready to play.
"The roster includes catcher
Bobbie Grant who has led the
team in hitting and has the
ability to pick runners off the
bases at any time.
"Lonnie Hawke is an excel-
lent fielding first baseman
who hits for a high average
year after year.
"Rob Burk showed how
much heart he had in last
years's playoffs. He is a very
heads up type of player who
will do what is needed to
move base runners. Burk will
also do some pitching.
"Aaron Patterson is the best
fielding shortstop in the
league, plus he can hit for an
average and power and steal
bases when needed.
"Justin Hayter will play for
the entire season and shows
immense talent as a hitter offs last year.
and as a fielder.
"Other possibilities include
Terry Hogg who is versatile
enough to play any position
on the field.
"Newcomers are Chris
Gosnell and Brian McLeod
who will divide their time in
the infield, outfield and as
pitchers.
"A much improved Darwin
Barker will do some catching
and fill in when needed.
"The outfield has a strong
group of returnees. Adam
Leppington led the team in
hitting in the playoffs last fall.
He appears to be ready to do
more of the same this year.
"Nate Burns has recovered
from surgery on his hip and
will be in all star form very
soon.
"The excellent fielding and
timely hitting of Vic Oliveira
will be an asset for the team.
"Tim Eifert showed how he
could improve over the season
last year and will try to do it
again.
"If Dan Masse is used in the
field he shows by example
how hustle and heart can help
a team.
"Joe Fancer is another
prospect who has yet to play a
game for the Express.
"The pitching staff is much
improved. Derek Masse who
was the ace of the staff in pre-
vious years is returning.
"Brother Dan Masse who
was the star on last year's
team is taking on the role of
the number one relief pitcher
as well as some DH'ing. He
pitched a three up and three
down inning of relief in the
ninth against Forest.
"Terry Hogg has joined the
team full time and won two
important games in the play -
"Curtis Meyers will be able
to make more games this
year. He has shown the ability
to pitch and win against any
team he has faced.
"Burk was called upon to
pitch against many tough
teams last season and his
ability to come through in the
clutch is well known. Besides
that Chris Gosnell has joined
the staff.
"He showed a very live arm
in the game against Forest
allowing no rims on zero hits
over five innings He was a
top pitcher for St. Thomas in
previous years.
"Brian McLeod also looked
good against Forest allowing
one run on three scattered
hits. He is a hard throwing
right hander. If needed Grant
and Leppington can hurl a
few innings as well.
"The tandem of Fairbairn
and Grant prepare the team
for games with a little help
from the old timer.
Fulop said the Express
rapped 15 hits against the
Forest pitchers but scored
only once until the eighth.
That was accomplished by
back to back doubles by Hogg
and Patterson. They added
three in the eighth on hits by
Burk, Lonnie Hawke and a
suicide bunt from Hayter.
The final three runs were
based on hits by Hayter,
Gosnell and Leppington.
Leppington had four hits,
while Hayter had three.
Patterson, Burk and Hawke
had two each and single hits
came from Hogg, Gosnell and
Burns.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) implants have
helped people with Parkinson's Disease. There is
some research on the use of these devices to
stimulate the memory circuits in the brains of
Alzheimer patients. Work is being done in
Toronto right now to hopefully achieve this goal.
Some drugs have a narrow therapeutic index which means there
is only a small variation between too much medication and too
little. Examples of these drugs include thyroid medications,
warfarin, insulin and digoxin. In fact the last three drugs in this list
are the cause of the most adverse drug reactions in people over
65. It's important that older adults make sure they are taking these
drugs correctly.
If you think you are having a heart attack, chewing one
uncoated 325mg A.S.A. (Asprin) could limit the damage from the
attack and even save your life. If all you have in the house is the
8l mg size, chew four of them.
If you have asthma, you might want to look into purchasing a
peak flow meter. It's a portable, hand-held device that gives you a
measure of your ability to expel air from your lungs. It's a quick
way of determining how bad your breathing is.
