South Huron District High School Grade 10 student Allison Smith, who has danced for 10 years, received her $500 scholar- ship at the Dance Odyssey 2008 competition in London last month. Smith's scholarship allows her to participate in a dancing work- shop, working with some of the choreographers from the hit show "So You Think You Can Dance," as well as other well- recognized choreographers from around the world. The workshop Smith is taking is in October in Toronto. Smith says she's "excited" to be given this opportunity. Smith was also presented with a Dance Odyssey 2008 High Score Discipline Award for a solo she created herself, choreo- graphed to a poem, "I Am Meth." "It's about drug abuse," says Smith. Smith received the award for her overall effort. Smith says although she does ballet, tap, jazz, to name a few, lyrical dancing is her favourite. "It' slower. You express your- self to the music through a story," says Smith. Smith went to Germany to compete in the World Dance Championships five years ago, enjoyed the experience, and is looking forward to her workshop in the fall. Smith, who has danced in Huron Park and Centralia, now dances in Clinton at Dancepirations three day a week. She credits her teachers Lisa and Ashley Arnold for helping her achieve her goals. She also says her sister Kendra "was my inspiration to get into dance," while Mia Michaels from the U.S.A. is one of her role models.
