The tournament has become the second most important tournament on the tour and 60 players took part in the event. During the course of the day four champions were able to win their divisions after going through a lengthy elimination process of up to 106 games during the after- noon. Organizer Joe Fulop was also playing in the Open division as well as helping nm the event. Also helping were Bob Robilliard and Bob Russell who ran the changing of score cards and tallying of results as well as Russ Watson, Greg Matthison and the Beierling brothers who led the crew who cleaned up after the event. Fulop also thanks Jenny Rowe and her staff for supplying pies as part of the break. In the Open competition several players had scores which were close. Several top players including Brian Cook, Dan Shantz, Bill Freeman, Jason and Ray Beierling, Bob Mader and Fulop played well as the elimi- nation process took place. The top 12 players advanced to a second round where the scores were again close ranging from Shantz who had 61 points to Cook with 57. Freeman and Fulop were tied for the last two spots in the round of the four best players. In that round Bill Freeman jumped to an early lead and had 15 points. Cook started slowly but he had 14 points. Fulop had 12 points so he missed the final and said having played 100 games to get that far it was disappointing for he and the others who did not advance. Cook defeated Freeman two matches to zero in the final and received $200 with Freeman picking up $100. The 'B' pool round of four and the champi- onship round were domi- nated by teenage sensa- tion Nate Walsh. He won easily, defeating Robert Bonnett. The 'C' championship dragged on for an hour longer than the others as the players were involved in extra long matches. After three matches, which all went into over- time, Randy Wagler of Exeter defeated Rob Knechtal of Stratford. In the 'D' final Murray Matthison won the final over Ivan McClymont of Varna. Close to them in the round of four was Reg Matthison of Stratford who barely missed the Tough shot - Crokinole players Joe Fulop of Exeter (above) and Jason Beierling ofVarna were among the 60 players competing at the Exeter Crokinole tournament Saturday at South Huron District High School.
