EXETER — "Once a teacher, always
teacher."
That is the motto of several former
teachers at Exeter Public School who
continue to bring the benefit of
their experience to the school by
volunteering once a week.
The group of volunteers includes
Sandi Robilliard, Jo -Ann Hayman,
Grace Brine, Helen Coates and
Eleanor Clark who say they were
volunteers at the school while they were
teaching and they decided to do the same
because they knew they knew there was
a need.
Coates adds she also volunteers
because her daughter, who has special
a needs, has volunteers helping her and
Coates decided to repay the service by
doing the same.
Among the comments made by the
group include, "It keeps your brain
active," "it's rewarding," "it's fun to
work with kids," "it keeps us
1==311,_,-. current," and "if you volunteer,
\, J you live longer."

Dietrich finds teachers need extra
help in, except for Clark who vol-
unteers in math enrichment.
The retired teachers say the
advantages of volunteer teaching
are not having to do paperwork,
leaving more time to work with
the students.
As the year goes by, the volun-
teers say the students get to know
them.
"They appreciate the extra
help," says Hayman. "It's amazing
how many say thanks."

The importance of reading — Usborne Central School celebrated
Education Week last week with a literacy night at the school. The school
featured speakers such as Susan Ellison, a reading and numeracy teacher
with the Avon Maitland District School, who spoke about effective read-
ing. There was also a book sale organized by the Grade 5/6 class in the
gym with proceeds going to South Huron Hospital. Guest readers read
stories to students in various classrooms.Among the guest readers were
South Huron District High School student Kyle Prout, above third from

Capsule Comments

Over the past few years there have been
comprehensive bans on smoking in public places.
New York City was an early proponent of this
policy and has noticed an 8% drop in hospital
admissions due to heart attacks within one year
after the new smoking bans were started.
Between the years of 2000 and 2006 in Africa, deaths due to
measles fell from 396,000 to 36,000 due primarily to increased
routine measles vaccinations. For the first time, vaccination coverage
for this disease in Africa reached 80% of children for the first time in
history.
The allergy season is almost upon us. There are excellent non-
sedating antihistamine medications available which do an excellent
job of controlling allergies. However, serious sufferers should look at
immunotherapy or allergy shots. This method of allergy control has
been around for many years but still is very effective in the long term.
Something to be considered.
Opium is the juice extracted from the bulb of the poppy plant.
The first prescription written for opium occurred around 1552 B.C. Its
toxicities were noted by Galen in the 2nd Century A.D. Opium was
abused much over the centuries until strict controls over its use were put
in place in the early 1900s.
