The Times Advocate, 2008-04-23, Page 12Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Times -Advocate 11 `Locavores' in Zurich for tourism ZURICH — The Huron Tourism Association hosted its 19th annual tourism event and brochure swap last week at the Bluewater Community Centre in Zurich and organizers said it was the best yet. Event chairperson Duncan Jewell said while the day had a locavore' theme of buy- ing local food, it wasn't all about food. Jewell said the event is about supporting every aspect of the local economy. The Huron and Perth Buy Local - Buy Fresh campaign was officially launched at the event. It's part of a province wide campaign to buy locally produced food and support local producers. Tourism co-ordinator Cindy Fisher says the goal is not only to identify local products but to make people aware of the range of products available locally. (photo/Pat Bolen) POLICE BRIEF Bluewater woman charged SOUTH HURON — On April 15 a Huron OPP officer began pacing a speeding vehicle on Huron Street west in Exeter. The vehicle speed went up to over 120 kilometres per hour prior to leaving the 50 kilo- metre per hour zone. The vehicle then continued to excessively speed up Airport Line prior to the traffic stop being initiated. As a result, a 27 -year-old Bluewater woman is charged under the Street Racing Legislation. She is to appear in Goderich Provincial Offences Court June 13, to answer to her charge. Her vehicle was impounded for seven days and her driver's licence was also suspended for seven days. WI holds annual meeting CREDITON — The Crediton Women's Institute held their annual meeting April 16 at the home of Rosemary Neeb. President Alma Davey welcomed all and opened the meeting. The roll call "A flower starting with your first name initial was answered by 12 members. Members also paid their dues. Monthly and yearly reports were read. Anne Cottel had a written report of the Board Meeting for all members. The Crediton WI is host- ing the District Annual May 15 at Riverview Estates in Exeter. Final plans for that event were made with Crediton looking after the welcome, registration and entertainment. Anne Cottel gave an Ad -Hoc report on some of the future plans for Crediton area buildings, etc. Anne also gave the nominations report for 2008- 09. Lois Hodgins then installed the officers. The Zurich Fall Fair list was discussed and plans made for the May mystery trip. A quiz was answered by members and Lois Hodgins won the prize. Over 800 advance -only tickets were sold. At Granton -Wesley United Church on Sun., April 20, Pastor Paul Vollick led the service. The message was entitled "The neigh- bour's lawn might be green, but it still needs to be maintained." Mary Waters gave the minute for mission, and Emily Young lit the Christ candle. The Scripture read- ings were from John 14 and 1st Peter 2. Time was shared with the young people of the congregation. The Vacation Bible School is sched- uled for July 21 to 25. Last week's joint service had 255 in attendance and 35 choir mem- bers held at the Ailsa Craig Community Centre, hosted by Ilderton-Birr and the Ailsa Craig congregations. At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on the fifth Sunday of Easter, April 20, the Rev. Dalice Sim celebrated the Holy Eucharist. Carol Herbert read the Scripture lessons. The message was about showing the power of God's love to everyone. French toast and maple syrup stirs up memories HENSALL — The residents' week started with fun and fitness in the sunroom with Nicole. In the after- noon they enjoyed bingo with assis- tance and prizes provided by the Hensall Presbyterian women. Pancakes with fresh maple syrup and fruit was a hit at breakfast group Tuesday morning. residents had requested the tasty treat at food committee so it will also be served as a dessert one evening. Father Poel of St. Boniface was in to see the Roman Catholic residents assisted by Mariette Bilcke and Betty Grenier. Rev. Anne Krueger of Zurich Lutheran Church led worship Tuesday afternoon with Belva Fuss as volunteer pianist along with Kay Mock helping residents. Donna Smale was in to organize the euchre players Wednesday afternoon while other residents benefited from manicures. Thursday was a busy day for retirement home residents as dietary supervisor Joan Bradley, served up French toast (hot off the griddle) in their dining room with fresh maple syrup for breakfast. This breakfast prompted lots of memories for residents who used to boil their own syrup. Later in the day, Julie Grimminck retirement home director, introduced Pauline of the Cancer Society who gave a presentation on "Seven Steps to Health." Julie also presented the donation of $190.00 collected at our `Spring Daffodil Tea' to the Cancer Society. Following the presentation banana bread and strawberries were served. Friday morning Lisa Stewart music therapist, provided her ser- vice throughout the day with sever- al residents benefiting from her Rhythm for Life drumming group. The tuck / library cart traveled through the retirement home on Tuesday and then volunteer Millie Hoggarth spent Friday afternoon taking the tuck / library cart through the nursing home. She assisted residents with borrowing or returning books.
