One of the biggest advances in the treatment of
angina and blood pressure occurred in 1965 with
the introduction of propranolol a drug which
spawned a whole new class of drugs, the beta-
blockers, of which there are many derivatives of the
original propranolol in use today and saving many lives.
During a hospital stay, your regularly -taken medications may be
changed. Before you leave, check with your doctor to determine what
you are to take and what you are to stop taking. Often, drugs with
different names are in the same therapeutic class and taking both is
not advised. Before you take it, talk about it.
Cancer treatment is getting very focused. In Florida, they are treating
liver cancer with special radioactive spheres that are infused into the
artery that supplies all blood to the liver. These little beads will deliver
radiation directly to the tumors in the liver for 11 days. The treatment
looks very promising.
Nursing mothers have to be cautious when taking medications like
antibiotics because infants may absorb some of the drug via the breat
milk. There are times when an antibiotic is absolutely necessary and
some are better at limiting the baby's exposure to the drug. Your doctor
and pharmacist can check this for you.
