The Times Advocate, 2008-04-16, Page 13Wednesday, April 16, 2008 SPORTS Times -Advocate 13 Skating awards - The Bluewater Zurich Skating Club had an excellent season with a great time had by all. Eighteen skaters passed 71 Skate CanadaTests with many achieving new levels, including two gold tests passed.There were also 75 Canskate badges passed this year.The club thanks coach Patty Doughtery, assistant Canskate coach Melissa Hendrick and freelance coaches Sherrie Moore and MarcyWalker for their hard work and dedication. On April 18 some of the skaters will go to London to skate with 1988 Olympic medalists Elizabeth Manley and the skaters are looking forward to the experience. (photos/submitted) Canada repeats again as amputee hockey world champions NEW ENGLAND - The day after watching Canada's Sledge Team win world championship gold, Canada's National Standing Amputee hockey team accomplished the same feat, on the same ice. "It's something that you never get tired of" said Team Canada captain, Don Wade. "Winning four in a row is something very special, certainly a feat not many hockey teams can say they've done." Canada opened the tournament April 2, with a 9-0 win over Finland and then followed up with a 9-0 win over Latvia on April 3rd. The final round robin game was played April 4 against Team USA, seeing Canada win a spirited affair, 4-1. April 6, Canada again faced team USA, with the Canucks claiming the gold medal in a crowd pleasing match that ended with the score 6-2 in our favour. The Sledge Hockey World Championships in Marlborough was held in conjunction with the United States Disabled Hockey Festival and featured Disabled Hockey Teams from all across North America, as well as, both the Canadian and American under -18 Standing Amputee Hockey Teams. The result ended up being an undefeated week for Canada, as the Under -18 squad defeated the American's in two exhibition match- es also held on the weekend.
