(photos/Nina Van Lieshout) Midget girls win LLFHL championship in gold medal game over Barrie EXETER — The South Huron Midget 'B' girls traveled to Vaughn on Friday to play the fmals of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) Midget B champi- onship. There were 40 teams in the league with South Huron in the West Division and finishing 24 –0-4. To get to the championship South Huron opened with Woodstock, losing the first game and winning the next two. Goals came from Keri Reschke with four, and Brett Sararas with two, as well as singles from Amanda Vandenberk, Ashley Denomme, Kristen Hefley and Avalon Kerslake. South Huron then advanced to play Twin Centers, sweeping them in two games with five goals from Reschke and one from Kerslake. Next was Mt. Brydges where South Huron lost the first game, tied the second and won the third game in overtime. South Huron was led by Reschke with four goals and sin- gles from Sararas, Hefley and Vandenberk. On Friday South Huron's first game was against Peterborough who were undefeated in the East and South Huron came up against a strong goaltender. Reschke opened the scoring with an assist from Sararas in the first and Peterborough scored a goal late in the third to tie the game. The game was deadlocked after overtime and went to a shootout. South Huron goalie Stacey LaPorte stopped all three shoot- ers and Reschke scored the only goal for South Huron in the shootout. The gold medal game was against Barrie who won earlier in the North- South game. Sararas opened the scoring with Reschke scoring the second goal on an assist from Ashley Denomme to win the game 2-0 and the championship. The award is presented annu- ally to the player judged to have exhibited the best sportsman- Jeff Campbell ship combined with a high stan- dard of playing ability. ECHL coaches vote on the player who most deserves the award. Campbell becomes the second Gladiator to win the award while wearing a Gwinnett uniform. Campbell was also named to the All-ECHL first team on Friday. Campbell was named to the All-ECHL first team and was named the ECHL's most valuable player following the 2005-06 season and he was named to the ECHL All -rookie team in his rookie year of 2004-05. Campbell tallied 25 goals and 65 assists for 90 points in 64 games with the Gladiators this season. Included in that total was a streak of 13 straight games in which Campbell notched at least one assist. The streak, in which Campbell notched 20 assists, was good for the Gwinnett record for longest assist - scoring streak, besting Brad Schell's mark of 11 games set in the 2006-07 season. Celebrating its 20th anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The Gladiators finished the regular season in third place in the South Division with a record of 44-23-5 for 93 points. The point total was the second highest point total in franchise history and the fifth highest point total in the entire 25 -team ECHL.
