TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Everyone has
heard the words "Let your
fingers do the walking "
That sounds easy! Two
locals are taking those
words 60 kilometres far-
ther... they are letting
their feet do the walking
and the talking.
Brenda Morrissey of
Exeter and Liz Campbell
of Staffa are
two partici-
pants of a 21 -
member team `Valentine
walking 60 km L
through the
streets of
Toronto.
The "Weekend to End
Breast Cancer" Sept. 6
and 7 is simply this, an
awesome life changing
adventure. During one
weekend, thousands of
women and men will
unite to walk 60 km in a
bold display of courage
and commitment.
Campbell's sister, Jane
Giffin, prompted her to
join the fight to end can-
cer. Giffin valiantly
walked the 60 kms in
2007 only two weeks out
of radiation. Campbell
was so inspired by her sis-
ter's bravery, she signed
up in the fall of 2007 to
join Giffin in the 2008
walk.
"Jane did the walk after
all that she went through.
She said it was an amaz-
ing experience. When I
told Jane I was joining her
in the 2008 walk, she was
so pleased to hear that,"
Campbell commented.
Jane Giffin passed away
at the young age of 34 on
Feb. 14, 2008, after a two -
"Jane is o
year battle with cancer.
Campbell added, "Jane is
my inspiration. We signed
up to walk with our team
captain and never
dreamed she would not be
here to walk with us. Jane
is our motivation for this
walk."
Morrissey added,
"Watching the battles Liz
has gone through in the
last couple of years with
Bruce and Jane, I couldn't
not do it. We
have been
friends
Angel." through thick
Iz CAMPBELL and thin. I
wanted to
show my sup-
port to Liz and her fami-
ly." Morrissey did not
want her best friend to
walk alone.
This weekend is a week-
end of hope, as Morrissey
and Campbell find heroes
in themselves, celebrate
survivors and help bring
breast cancer care to
those who desperately
need it.
The very words "breast
cancer" strike fear into
most of us. We've all
heard the statistics, one in
nine women will get the
disease during her life-
time.
But don't let the number
frighten you. Research
about detecting, treating
and even preventing
breast cancer is an ongo-
ing battle and positive
things are happening.
Raising money to find a
cure is exactly what
Morrissey and Campbell
plan to do. They must
both raise at least $2,000
for the cause. Campbell
has pledged to raise
$3,500.
ur
To help these two local
walkers reach their goal,
they are hosting a golf
tournament in memory of
Jane Giffin at the
Ironwood Golf Course on
June 27. Everyone is
invited to get a foursome
together and come swing
away.
The entry fee is $75 per
person which includes
nine -holes of golf (cart
extra), T-shirt, prizes,
meal and loads of fun.
Tee -off time is noon.
Golfers must register
between 11 and 11:30
a.m. Deadline for entry
fee is May 1. A tax receipt
of $25 per golfer will be
issued.
If you are unable to
enjoy the round of golf, a
$50 donation entitles you
to a t -shirt, meal and $25.
tax receipt.
For area businesses who
would like to sponsor this
fundraising event, a dona-
tion of $100 or more will
allow the business to have
its name personally show-
cased at the golf course.
Any monetary donation
would be appreciated by
the two participants.
If you are unable to join
everyone June 27, dona-
tions will be accepted by
Morrissey and Campbell
personally or anyone can
pledge online at
www.endcancer.ca, click
on Toronto and look for
the team name "Walkers
4 Knockers."
All donations go directly
to The Princess Margaret
Hospital Foundation.
Proceeds from the event
stay in the province and
are invested in leading-
edge breast cancer
research, prevention and
screening programs, edu-
cation, care and other
critical breast cancer ini-
tiatives.
Morrissey and Campbell
have started their training
for the weekend in
September, walking the
roads between Cromarty
and Exeter.
The "Weekend to End
Breast Cancer" is their
chance to go the distance
in the fight against this
disease. It's their chance
to be a hero for someone
they love or someone they
may never even meet.
The 60 km walk will not
be an easy trek but
Morrissey and Campbell
are "pumped" for the
experience. As Campbell
said, "Jane is our
`Valentine Angel.' She is
motivating Brenda and I,
and we both know she
will be carrying us across
the finish line."
