NFU convention in Woodstock Saturday
WOODSTOCK - The National
Farmers Union (NFU) will hold its
annual regional convention in
Woodstock this Saturday. The
meeting will determine the NFU's
priorities for the coming year,
and will feature speakers on a
number of issues
including energy poli-
cy and the livestock
crisis.
The meeting is slat-
ed for the John Knox
Christian School, 800
Juliana Drive, close to
the junction of
Highway 401 and
Highway 59 in the
south end of
Woodstock.
The crisis facing
livestock producers is
a priority for the NFU,
according to NFU Ontario Co-
ordinator Grant Robertson. At
the organization's recent national
convention in London in
November 2007, several resolu-
tions called attention to the con-
centration of ownership in the
meat packing sector. The NFU
has consistently stated that farm-
ers need increased market power
to earn better returns for their
products.
NFU director of research Darrin
Qualman is scheduled to speak
on the results of
his research into
the state of the
livestock industry
in Canada.
Focusing on cor-
porate concentra-
tion, government
policy and price
trends, the ses-
sion will also
explore concrete
solutions to the
difficulties facing
livestock farmers.
Rick Howe, a
farmer from Howe Island and a
long-time NFU member who has
conducted extensive research
into energy issues, will speak on
energy security, energy reserves
and alternative energy.
The meeting will see a number
"Unless action is
taken immediately, we
could lose a significant
portion of this
country's cow -calf
producers, and
virtually all our
remaining
independent hog
producers," said
Robertson.
of policy resolutions debated dur-
ing the afternoon session, as well
as elections for NFU National
Board and Regional Council posi-
tions. All NFU members and
interested farmers are welcome
to attend.
Robertson said after the NFU
Ontario regional meeting, a poli-
cy workshop is planned for
Sunday. This workshop will focus
on the livestock issue, particular-
ly on the report scheduled to be
presented by the NFU research
director.
"Unless action is taken immedi-
ately, we could lose a significant
portion of this country's cow -calf
producers, and virtually all our
remaining independent hog pro-
ducers," said Robertson. "This is
the worst crisis that livestock
farmers have faced in a genera-
tion."
