Zurich needed to win to force game six and bring it back to Zurich. Unfortunately luck was not on their side and the long season had taken its toll on Zurich. After two strong periods with two goals by Colin Gingerich, and one by Kris Ducharme the Thunder went into the third trailing 4-3. Both teams played tough but Ops had more energy left and scored a couple early in the third to give them the momentum. With the home crowd cheering them on, Ops seemed to have the edge to carry them to the end. Zurich didn't give up and continued bat- tling in the corners and scored a late fourth goal from the point by Greg Cooper to bring Zurich within two but they seemed to run out of gas. With Zurich running out of time Ops answered back with another quick goal which sealed the deci- sion. The parents and all the Zurich fans are proud of the boys for making it an unfor- gettable season. Special mention goes out to goaltender Josh Groot for his strong season and to the coaching staff of Mike Masse, Jeff Finkbeiner, Jeff Smale, Ray Mathonia, Jeff Mathonia and manager Dwayne LaPorte. Novice Jacobi winners ZURICH — The Zurich Novice hockey team are Jacobi Cup Consolation Champions of the WOAA playoffs. After only a few wins in the regular season the team had an impressive playoff run, knocking off Chesley in two straight games in the finals. In game one Jacob Laporte started the scoring off early, fol- lowed by Travis Cressman's tally with one second remaining in the first period, with both goals unassisted. The visitors battled back to tie the game before Joey Mathonia scored the winning goal with two minutes left in the third period from Maclntyre Schilbe and Cressman. In game two Zurich got off to another early start with Tyler Merner scoring from Connor Brand, followed by Rachel Tsitomeneas with the first goal of her career on assists from Merner and Brand. Chesley came back with one in the second, before Merner scored his second from Brand and Tsitomeneas part way through the third to put the locals up by two. Chesley made it 3-2 and pulled their goalie in the last minute, but Zurich held them off for the win. Charlotte Finlay made key saves in both games to secure the victories. The team provided exciting hockey for the fans, with every game in the last two rounds being one -goal games.
