Grant for Bluewater
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
VARNA — After coming up short in the
last few years for funding of its infra-
structure, Bluewater is receiving almost
$2.5 million in provinical funding that
was announced last week by Huron -
Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell.
"This is great news for Huron -Bruce,"
said Mitchell.
"We're working to fix up the roads that
connect our communities because fami-
lies and goods need to get to where
they're going quickly and efficiently - it's
good for families and it's good for the
economy."
Bluewater received $821,494 for its roads and bridges
as well as $1.75 million for the Bayfield
water storage project that has a totalcost
of $3.5 million.
The $1.75 million was the full amount
Bluewater applied for.
Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson said the
money will be available immediately and
the roads money will help the municipal-
ity serve the travelling public.
"We're pretty pleased," said Dowson
who added the municipality is into bud-
get deliberations and it would have a
better idea by the end of a budget meet-
ing held yesterday (Tuesday) about budget figures and
when it would be finalized.

Mixed news for SH
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — When it came to the matter of provincial
funding last week, it was a case of good news and bad news for
South Huron.
The good news came Thursday, when the province
announced $18.5 million in funding for roads and bridges in
Huron -Bruce. Of that, South Huron will receive $726,053.
"It's a pleasant surprise," South Huron Mayor Ken Oke said of
the funds last week. He said he wasn't sure yet where the
money would be spent but he hoped the municipality could use
it to alleviate the tax burden on ratepayers.
He said the money will not necessarily be used this year and
South Huron will only use it for projects that are cost efficient.
"We as a municipality appreciate this," Oke said of the funds,
adding downloading of costs has made it a fmancial struggle
for municipalities but he's pleased to see the province sharing
its money.
The news for South Huron wasn't so positive Friday after-
noon when the municipality learned it was denied a Municipal
Infrastructure Investment Initiative grant.
South Huron had applied for a $479,000 grant to cover 90
per cent of the costs to the replacement of "co -located" bridges
on Corbett Line, Shipka Line and Huron Road.

Canada. The fundraiser successful-
ly raised $16,000.
Huron and Perth County Crime
Stoppers police co-ordinator Shawn
McFalls says, "It's now time for
Crime Stoppers to venture out on
our own," adding hosting the event
in Exeter is the perfect spot.
