Skaters win world silver in Sweden
SWEDEN - Ilderton's Scott Moir,
along with Tessa Virtue of London
won the free dance and earned the
silver ice dancing medals at the
world figure skating champi-
onships Friday in Goteberg,
Sweden.
Virtue and Moir were third after
the original dance but won the free
dance to move to the second rung
of the podium.
Virtue, 18, and Moir, 20, are
among the youngest skaters ever
to step onto the world ice dancing
podium.
It was the ninth time in 13 years
that Canadians have won world ice
dancing medals.

Ball Hall sponsors spring clinics for kids
ST. MARYS - It's time for the
Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to
begin hosting its annual weekly
indoor clinics at District Collegiate
and Vocational Institute (DCVI) high
school to prep local players for the
upcoming ball season.
"In the same vein as letting all St.
Marys teams play on the Hall's fields
for free, we conduct these complimen-
tary indoor clinics for St. Marys'
youth as a token of thanks to the com-
munity and our local volunteers who
are the life blood of the Hall of
Fame," said Ball Hall CEO Tom
Valcke.
"It is also encouraging to see the
town of St. Marys and DCVI chip in by
giving us access to the gym at no cost,
which enables us to not charge the
kids."
Beginning on Friday, boys and girls
aged 6-9 are encouraged to attend the
sessions at DCVI from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
with the 10-16 year-olds slated for
the 7:30 to 9 p.m. time slot.
The clinics focus on FUNdamentals
and are open to boys and girls who
play baseball or softball, whether they
are experienced or beginners.
In order for the Hall to arrange the
appropriate coaches, equipment and
stations, players are encouraged to
register as soon as possible by tele-
phoning the Hall's administrative
office at 284-1838, dropping by the
office at 140 Queen St. E., or by
emailing baseball@baseballhallof-
fame. ca
The Hall requires the participant's
full name and age.
The clinics run for five weeks on
consecutive Friday nights starting
Friday, with the exception of moving
the second week's clinic to Saturday
morning on April 5.
On that day, the 6-9 year-olds will
attend from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and the
10-16 year-olds from 10:30 to noon.
The final three clinics will revert
back to Friday nights on April 11, 18
and 25.
"Our registrations and the quality of
play throughout St. Marys have
improved over the recent years, and
there is no question that these clinics
have prepared our kids to hit the
ground running in May," said St.
Marys Minor Ball president Lothar
Mueller.
Players should come dressed in com-
fortable clothing and should bring
indoor shoes and a baseball glove if
they have one.
The Hall, with assistance from St.
Marys Minor Ball, will provide the
necessary equipment.
The Hall is looking to bolster the
instructors as more than 100 players
are likely to attend the clinics.
Contact the Hall if you can help out
for any of the five clinics.
Blue Jays clinic
The Toronto Blue Jays will conduct
a coaching clinic for 6-16 year-old
boys and girls on May 3 on the Hall's
St. Marys Cement Company Field and
Rotary Field.
In addition to the instruction, each
participant will receive a Blue Jays
cap, a Blue Jays T-shirt, a barbecue
lunch and a ticket voucher for a Blue
Jays game included in the anticipated
$20 price.
The 6-9 year-olds will be taught
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the 10-16
year-olds will receive their instruction
from 2 to 6 p.m.
Lunch will be provided for all kids
between 1 and 2 p.m. Pre -register
with the Hall.
Pitch, Hit and Run contest
Another annual tradition will contin-
ue on May 10 when the Pitch, Hit and
Run contest will be held at the Hall.
Top performers will advance to
regionals and hopefully on to the
Rogers Centre and possibly Yankee
Stadium for the MLB All-Star game.
Boys and girls aged 7-14 as of July
14 are eligible, and there is no cost to
enter. Register with the Hall.
Second Annual Fantasy
Baseball Pool
Fantasy players can match wits with
baseball junkies across Canada and
take down defending champion Paul
Gregus for bragging rights by enter-
ing the Hall's second annual Fantasy
Baseball Pool.
The deadline for entry is Friday with
$10 per entry and multiple entries are
allowed.
Prizes have been tripled from last
year and more info is on the Hall's
website.
