Lucan Lions donate $12,000 to local charities
$4,000 cheques — The Lucan Lions Club presented three cheques Monday night, from the proceeds collected at the Lucan Lions Club 20th Annual Fish Fry Dinner
and Dance at the Lucan Memorial Community Centre Feb. 9.The silent auction raised $12,000, with 185 businesses, organizations and individuals donating 230 items.

TORONTO — Canada's National Standing
Amputee Hockey Team is busy preparing to
travel to Boston for the fourth International
Standing Ice Hockey Federation's World
Championships, March 31 to April 6.
Also traveling to Boston April 4-6 will be the
Under -18 Team Canada. They will play
against the Under -18 Team U.S.A. and some
local teams from the Boston area which will
give them some experience on the internation-
al level.
Team Canada has been preparing for these
Worlds since early December with Canadian
Amputee Hockey Committee (CAHC) selection
camp in Toronto, which drew players from all
across Canada vying for a spot on the National
Team's roster.
Canada won gold in Helsinki Finland at the
first 2003 ISIHF Worlds.
They repeated in Prague Czech Republic in
2004 and again in Riga Latvia, all three times
defeating Team USA in the finals.
2007 was an off year on the world stage for
the sport, however, the National Team players
as well as the Under 18 Team traveled to
Winnipeg for a tournament against some of
Winnipeg's local teams.
The games in Boston are being held during
the fourth Annual Disabled Hockey Festival.
The Festival games also include the World
Championships in Sledge Hockey.

Grand Bend man faces impaired charges
GRAND BEND — On March 14, it is alleged that officers were conducting a RIDE check-
point at Ontario and Main Street in Grand Bend, observing a vehicle that approached
Ontario Street from River Street. At the intersection, the driver is alleged to have reversed
his vehicle back up River Street. An officer immediately proceeded to River Street to
investigate as the vehicle continued to reverse along the street for more than a block.
When the car pulled into a parking lot, the officer approached the male driver and spoke
to him. It was determined that he was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and
arrested. Subsequent breath tests revealed that a 41 -year-old Grand Bend man was more
than one time the legal limit He will appear in Sarnia Court April 28, facing charges of
impaired driving and being over the legal limit
Dashwood man fails breath test
GRAND BEND — On March 15 it is alleged that an officer patrolling in the area of Oak
and Ontario Street in Grand Bend had reason to stop a GMC van. Upon speaking to the
male driver, it was determined he had been drinking and a roadside demand was made of
him. The result of that test was a fail and he was arrested. Subsequent breath tests
revealed that a 50- year-old Dashwood man was more than one time the legal limit He
will appear in Sarnia Court April 28, facing a charge of being over the legal limit.
Province announces funds for affordable housing
CLINTON — Huron County will
receive $278,900 and Bruce
County will get $362,147 for
repairs to affordable housing as
part of the government's plan to
help low-income families suc-
ceed, Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell announced this week.
The funding for Huron -Bruce
is part of the McGuinty govern-
ment's $100 million investment
to assist with repairs of about
4,000 affordable housing units
across Ontario.
The government will also
invest $135 million over three
years in a dental care plan for
low income families. Public
health units, community health
centres, dentists and dental
hygienists will provide preven-
tion and treatment services.
Finally, the government will
help students from low-income
families by expanding school
breakfast and snack programs.
The Student Nutrition Program
will be doubled with a three-
year $32 -million investment to
expand existing services. These
programs currently provide
healthy snacks and meals for
400,000 kids across Ontario.
"This new funding will mean
better quality affordable hous-
ing for Huron -Bruce families,"
said Mitchell. "We want every-
one in Ontario to have the
opportunity to succeed, no mat-
ter where they come from."
"Huron County is very appre-
ciative for this funding for
affordable housing repairs,"
said Huron County Warden John
Bezaire. "This funding will allow
us to properly maintain our
affordable housing program and
continue its sustainability into
the future."
