The Times Advocate, 2008-03-12, Page 3Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Times–Advocate Producers meet at Soil and Crop By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HOLMESVILLE — The Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association held its producer meeting Feb. 26 with a variety of speakers addressing farmers at the Holmesville Community Centre. Among the speakers was Steve Kell from Parrish and Heimbecker who provided a mar- ket outlook and said despite the biggest corn crop in history last year, ethanol demands continue to climb. "We're not close to running out of corn," said Kell. "We're just using it faster." Kell said the corn demand is affecting other crops such as wheat, which he said the sup- ply of around the world is too low. "The best cure for low prices is low prices," said Kell who added stocks of wheat are "precariously low," and there could be shipping and storage issues in the fall for wheat. "You may not want to put it in a bin," said Kell. "The first guy combining should take it to a terminal." Kell said the bean basis is probably too low and the price will probably go higher since no one has many left to sell. With soybean stocks at 18 days, Kell said "the soybean market has to defend its acres." But overall Kell said things are looking up for farmers. "Agriculture has more buying traction in the economy than it used to...there is a lot more clout. People take food serious- ly and as long as there is farming for energy, prices will stay good." Retired Exeter chiropractor killed FLORIDA — A retired Exeter chiropractor was killed March 3 in a motor vehicle colli- sion. Dr. Gerald Allan Webb, 76, of Exeter was killed near his winter residence in Arcadia, Florida. Webb leaves behind his wife Lois M. (Elsie) Webb, and children Jim and Margo Webb of London and Judy and Chris Mackie of Hanover, along with three grandchildren. The funeral for Webb was Monday at Exeter United Church. Donations in memory of Webb can be made to the South Huron Hospital Campaign Fund or a charity of choice. Snowmobilers trespassing on properties HURON — Huron OPP officers received numerous complaints of snowmobilers tres- passing on private properties last weekend. Some incidents occurred in rural areas and several occurred in built up areas. Most stemmed from snowmobilers who travelled off the designated trail and cut across pri- vate property to get to their destination. This is considered trespassing by police. Snowmobilers are urged to be considerate and lawful while enjoying their winter recre- ation. Snowmobilers who are stopped and identified will be charged if necessary.
