KIRKTON — It was a love
of snowmobiles, and in par-
ticular antique sleds, that
brought people together to
the `Antique Snowmobile
Day Show and Shine' at the
Kirkton-Woodham
Community Centre Feb. 24.
Hosted by the Pineridge
Snowmobile Club, the day
featured a variety of antique
snowmobiles from the late
1960s to around 1979.
Pineridge club secretary
and event organizer Calvin
Rodd, whose sleds include a
1970 Massey Ferguson and
a 1971 Scorpion Mach II,
said the industry has
changed dramatically over
the past 30 years. While in
the mid-1970s, there were
200 snowmobile manufac-
turers, there are now only
four major manufacturers
— Bombardier, Arctic Cat,
Polaris and Yamaha.
Hosting the day in Kirkton
was apt, Rodd said, because
there were two snowmobile
dealers in the Kirkton area
in the 1970s.
About 30 sleds were on
display in Kirkton, with
mostly local riders, although
there were people from as
far away as Lucknow, St.
Catharines and Kitchener -
Waterloo.
Rodd said antique snow-
mobile enthusiasts are simi-
lar to fans of old cars — it's
a chance to relive your
childhood.
Richard Shantz of the
Antique Classic Snowmobile
Club of Canada was also on
hand, and said his club has
about 1,000 members
across the country. He said
interest in antique snowmo-
biles is growing as baby
boomers become more nos-
talgic. He said old sleds are
particularly prevalent in
rural areas, where you can
often find them in old barns.

Catholic board adjusts policies
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
DUBLIN — Two pre-existing poli-
cies will be rolled into one, and
changes will be made to how exist-
ing curriculum is delivered, all in an
attempt by the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School Board to
strengthen its ability to promote
environmental sustainability.
"We've decided it's time to do bet-
ter," said education superintendent
Dan Parr before the board's regular
meeting Feb. 25. At the meeting,
trustees approved a recommenda-
tion to create a new policy titled
"Environmental Stewardship,"
aimed both at ensuring current
practices are ecologically sound and
promoting a long-lasting sense of
environmental responsibility among
students.
"We are stewards of the environ-
ment and we have to be conscious
of that," commented board chair-
person Bernard Murray, after pas-
sage of the policy by trustees. "Plus,
it helps raise the profile of the sys-
tem among the ratepayers, because
they see these things being done
and maybe start thinking about the
effects of what we do every day."
Parr says the board already had
policies directing the way its facili-
ties and employees limit the genera-
tion of garbage and use non-renew-
able resources. It also had a policy
stating that environmental con-
sciousness should be a considera-
tion in all board purchases.
The new policy, he explains,
strengthens the language on waste
diversion and purchasing. "I think

officers conducted a RIDE pro-
gram March 2 on Main Street in
Exeter in South Huron. A vehicle
approached the checkpoint, and
as officers spoke to the two male
occupants, a strong smell of
marijuana was detected.
Investigation revealed that the
two occupants of the vehicle
were both in possession of mari-
juana. Both males were arrested
for possession of a controlled
substance. Two men, a 26 -year-
old Goderich man and a 25 -year-
old Goderich man will both

facing one count each of posses-
sion of a controlled substance.
we do a better job addressing those
two issues," the superintendent
said.
But it also sets out a process for
incorporating environmental sensi-
tivity in various aspects of existing
Ontario curriculum.
"We'll be looking at opportunities
where there's a natural fit for
putting something about the envi-
ronment into the current curricu-
lum," Parr explained.
According to Murray, it's common
to hear about particular teachers,
students or parents who enthusias-
tically promote an environmentally
conscious initiative at a particular
school. With the new policy in
place, he says, the board hopes to
ensure those ideas spread through-
out the district.
"I say share it around. I think it's
important they remember to do
that," the chairperson commented.
The impetus behind the new poli-
cy came from the board's Eco
Schools committee, which compris-
es membership from various educa-
tion stakeholder groups. The com-
mittee looked at examples already
set by other school boards in
Ontario, but also drew inspiration
from an international organization
also called Eco Schools. That orga-
nization draws its insight and infor-
mation from education and environ-
ment experts at the United Nations.
