"No" to chew tobacco
Anti-smoking activists - Youth across Huron County have
signed close to 500 postcards petitioning the Ontario government
to ban the sale of chew tobacco.Youth action group Rebels with a
Cause, shown here using the cards to share their message, delivered
the bundle to Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell last week as part of
"National Through with Chew Week" activities. Chew tobacco con-
tains over 3,000 chemicals, 28 that are known to cause cancer and
can cause devastating health effects such as oral cancer, heart dis-

New soybean directors
GUELPH - The
Ontario Soybean
Growers (OSG) recently
announced a new exec-
utive to represent
Ontario's 25,000 soy-
bean growers.
Leo Guilbeault, a
grower from Essex
county and chair of the
Ontario Grains and
Oilseeds Safety Net
Committee was elected
as chair for a second
year at the Board's
inaugural meeting in
Guelph early this
month.
Kevin Marriott of
Lambton and Kim Fysh
of Kent were elected as
first and second vice
chairs along with John
Johnston of Elgin
rounding out the execu-
tive.
"We are fortunate to
have a very strong and
talented group of people
working on behalf of
soybean growers," says
Guilbeault.

Second cut sold 80 - 84. Cows sold on a steady trade.

Veal sold steady. Lambs sold higher on a strong active
trade. Sheep sold steady and goats sold on a strong
trade.
Friday
Calves sold steady and yearlings sold on a strong active
trade.
Steers
There were 521 steers on offer.
Jim Howatt of Londesboro consigned 12 steers averag-
ing 1540 lbs. selling for an average of 84.89 with one
limo steer weighing 1585 lbs. selling to Dominion Meat
Packers for 87.75.
John Wiersma of Blyth consigned eight steers averag-
ing 1487 lbs. selling for an average of 81.88 with one
gold steer weighing 1445 lbs. selling for 86.75.
Heifers
There were 296 heifers on offer.
Andy VanderVeen of Blyth consigned 11 heifers aver-
aging 1446 lbs. selling for an average of 84.85 with one
limo heifer weighing 1355 111S. selling to Dominion Meat
Packers for 86.50.
M -R Farms of Exeter consigned six heifers averaging
1417 lbs. selling for an average of 83.72 with one blk
heifer weighing 1350 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for
86.50.
Ken Shortreed of Walton consigned 18 heifers averag-
ing 1608 lbs. selling for an average of 85.21 with three
mix heifers averaging 1280 lbs. selling for 86.
Twin Oaks Poultry of Londesboro consigned nine
heifers averaging 1387 lbs. selling for an average of
85.25 with six limo heifers averaging 1378 lbs, selling to
Holly Park Meat Packers for 85.50.
Brian Bearss of St. Marys consigned 11 heifers averag-
ing 1300 lbs. selling for an average of 84.97 with seven

The market at Denfield Livestock
Sales traded steady with cattle
weighing over 1500 lbs. slightly dis-
counted, calves were steady and also
cows.
Rick Davidson, Thedford sold two
heifers weighing 1423 at 83.14.
Ben Kleeman, Parkhill sold four
heifers average weight 1271 average
price 84.69.
Circle in Farms, Arkona sold four
heifers average weight 1289 average
