"It's a municipal issue," said Keller. "Not a hospital issue. It's out of our scope." Keller added the association is concerned the doctor shortage will affect the hospital emergency room ser- vices. Keller said cities such as St. Catharines, Belleville and Barrie are offering large incentives to convince doctors to work there and that South Huron Hospital CEO Deb Hunt is always scram- bling to find doctors to cover weekends in the emergency room. Deputy Mayor George Roberston asked, "how much money are we talking about and from where?" Keller said the associa- tion isn't looking for a number. Asked if the association would like a councillor at their meet- ings, Keller said they are always welcome but it isn't the answer. Coun. Tom Tomes said, "You need a better retention commit- tee." Keller agreed, saying "one with more teeth." Tomes noted that SHH is maybe fighting a losing cause and that a lot of money is going to the county. Keller replied that the hospital is in better shape than ever. "It's not funding that's bothering us." "One way to succeed is to do other stuff," said Hanson. "We're surrounded by CAT Scans. What we're good at, we're great at." Asked by Coun. David Frayne if the situation will get better in a few years when more doctors graduate, Hanson said new graduates of medical schools are specializing and don't want See HOSPITAL page 2 icor HOME mkt INSURANCE Gaiser Kneale 519-235-2420 Insurance Brokers 1-888-235-2420 Serving Exeter, Grand B ■r. (photo/Scott Nixon) Exeter's Armstrong honoured for volunteerism By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — A well-known Exeter volunteer has been awarded the province's highest recognition for seniors. Vera Armstrong, 83, was awarded an Ontario Senior Achievement Award Feb. 15 during a special ceremony at Queen's Park with Lieutenant Governor David Onley and the Minister Responsible for Seniors Aileen Carroll. Accompanying Armstrong were her daughter Barbara from Owen Sound, her son. George and daughter-in-law Debbie from Whitby and South Huron Mayor Ken Oke. "I was quite excited about it," Armstrong said of her Senior Achievement Award, adding she's been a volunteer all her life. "I enjoy meeting people." Armstrong was one of only 26 Ontario seniors to receive the high honour this year. She was cited for her volunteer work with the South Huron Hospital Auxiliary, the Exeter Legion and for being a veteran of the Second World War, where, stationed in Centralia, she was first a wireless operator and then worked in meteorology. Armstrong has lived in Exeter since 1956 and worked as a residents' counsellor at Centralia College until retiring at the age of 65. "I was a mom to all those boys," she says with a smile. Armstrong's award was presented to her by Onley and Carroll and, as the ceremony was done alphabetically, Armstrong got to go first. "It was an honour to have it," Armstrong says, adding it was nice of Oke to also attend the ceremony. The Municipality of South Huron recommended Armstrong for the award, citing her strong volunteerism and involvement in the community, and Oke rec- ognized Armstrong's accomplishments at last week's council meeting. In a statement from the province, Onley said, "Ontario's seniors have made, and con- tinue to make, important contributions to our province. This group of honourees are exceptional community leaders and it is fit- ting to commend them and applaud their good works." Carroll added, "Our government is proud to recognize some of the unique and out- standing contributions made by seniors in See ARMSTRONG page 2 EXETER CHRYSLER "Your neighbourhood Chrysler Dealer" 519-235-1525 FIVE STAR 136 Main St. N., Exeter 00000 HEAR US ON fO49t f 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in black, 3.3 VG, Dual tops, keyless entry, power win- dows & locks, limited slip rear axle, air conditioning and 17" wheels.
