Conservation education technician Denise Biega started the ABCA's annual visits to local schools in early February, making a stop at Zurich Public last Friday. She will present the ABCA's Spring Water Awareness Program at 18 schools throughout the region until March Break. Speaking to students in Zurich last week, Biega warned students to be safe when outside. "It's important to be safe around water," she said, adding ice may not be thick enough to walk on and could be dangerous. Always read and obey all signs near water, she said, adding an adult should always check if the ice is thick enough to play on. She said children should always have a back-up plan when they go out to play — always tell someone where they are going and when they'll be back. "Ice is never 100 per cent safe and spring ice is rotten ice," Biega said, encouraging students to "stay safe this spring." She also told students to call 9-1-1 or get a parent during water -related emer- gencies. She also warned students of danger spots, such as dams and the banks of rivers and creeks. "A parent should be with you when you're around the water," she said.
