MARYS - The South Huron District High School junior girls volleyball team travelled to St. Marys for league play recently and fin- ished the day successfully win- ning two -out -of -three games against St. Marys and had a strong showing against St. Michael's. vs St. Marys A back and forth battle against St. Marys, found South Huron winning the first match 28-26, losing the second 25-27 but strongly winning the third game 25-11. Linette Melick, Alyssa Sweitzer, Nicole Insley, Josie McCann, Gina Phouttharath and Taelor Douglas led their team in the serving position. Sweitzer had a very strong game defensively while Jaemi Douglas as libero dug up lots of balls to start the attack. Teri Stuckless also played a very consistent power with smart spikes and tips. versus St. Mike's St. Mike's from Stratford has a very strong volleyball system and South Huron always finds it difficult to score points. The first game of the league play found the local squad playing very well and only los- ing 20-25. Teri Stuckless played strong notching three aces while Shay Dwyer added two aces. Linette Melick was a `force' at the net blocking several times for points. Dwyer, Melick, Stuckless and Marlee Heywood led their team in the serving position. The juniors head to Huron - Perth quarter finals this week. The junior team would like to thank Don Stuckless for his comfy mode of transportation to Ingersoll last week. The coaches and the team appre- ciate the kind offer. Jets swept out by Rocks LUCAN - For the third year lead in the series Friday night in a row, the Lucan-Ilderton in Elora with a 5-0 win. Justin Godwin did a fantastic job of keeping us in the game. We'll get them next time team! When this tyke team shows up with this type of positive attitude, they can be competitive with any team in the league. The focus of the game was to take the puck away from the other team before they had time to think and the Sabres did this very well. Colin Regier played goalie and robbed the Strathroy team of many goals. It was a difficult job selecting the stars of the game for this game, as every player was deserving of the award. The star players of the game were Jacob Ryan, Stephan Ducharme, Joel Denotter, and Nolan Regier. Congratulations team on a well earned tie game. Aylmer Tournament Feb. 1st - 3 This was our girls first tourna- ment. Friday was an early start for the girls and they played great. The won their first game against Grand River with a strong performance by all. Their second game was against London Devilettes on Saturday morning. The 7:15 a.m. game time meant a very early drive to Aylmer. Both teams were wide awake and a close and very entertaining game resulted in a 2-2 tie. A fair result and our girls were really pumped. The last game against Elora also ended in a tie 0-0. Again evenly matched teams played a great game. Our girls went through the round robin stage undefeated which was amazing when you consider we have two girls aged seven and one aged eight plying against mostly 9 and 10 year olds. Although we did not win our group we were in a strong posi- tion to go through to the semifi- nals in the wild card. That was not decided until the Sunday morning and the last game of the third group in the round robin. Mel, our coach, made many calls to the girls and again we went back to Aylmer for a semi final rematch against London. London came out 011 top in that game but we are so proud of the girls to have made it so far. These girls have come so far. Playoffs are here. It's now play off time for our girls. Their first game on Feb. 8 was against Lucan. These games are always close. South Huron won 2-0 with Jamie Clarke getting both goals. Well done to Lucan for never giving up. The girls played again on Saturday against St. Clair. St. Clair skated very strongly and won 4-0. Next up for our girls is a rematch with both Lucan and St. Clair. One thing you can be sure of is that South Huron Atom LL are always ready to play. Good luck girls with the rest of the play offs from the coaching gang and your moms and dads. Atom Girls Feb. 15 playoffs South Huron (House) 3 versus Lucan 0 This was a game of firsts: First goal for Leanne Taylor and Sarah Huston. This is a great reward for their hard efforts over the past few months. Jamie Clarke got the third goal. Great start to the weekend. Feb. 17 St. Clair 0 versus South Huron 0 Comments: Inspired is the only word I can use. Our girls came out and defended like warriors and when the opportunity pre- sented itself kept St Clair back on their heels. Near misses by Jamie and Katie served notice that our girls were ready. After losing 4-0 to this team last week our girls showed what you can accomplish with 100 per cent team work. Well done to our coaches for setting out the importance of fair play and sportsmanship to the girls before hand.
