The health care system in Ontario is indeed a complicated and confusing system at times. The province, through the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) provides funding for the operation of all hospitals in Ontario. However, they do not, and are not mandated to provide funding for "bricks and mortar." People of South Huron will remember that this hospital was built, and continues to be support- ed, by local donations and funds from the residents of this munici- pality. Today, the South Huron Hospital Foundation provides fund- ing for projects the Ministry does not cover. This is done through hard work of volunteers and the generous support from our commu- nity. The South Huron Hospital Foundation has done a terrific job raising the funds necessary for the recent upgrades to our hospital (over $1.6 million!). However, Mayor Oke mentions that the recent upgrades to our hospital, although important, were not supported by the province. This is not true. Just a few months ago, the Minister of Health, the Honourable George Smitherman, and our local Member of Parliament, Carol Mitchell visited South Huron Hospital and announced $1 million in funding towards the project at South Huron Hospital. Without this funding, the project would have been very diffi- cult to proceed with. The Foundation's fundraising goal would have been $2.6 million! We, the board members, are very appreciative of Carol Mitchell, the province and the Foundation for all of their support. We see it as a true partnership in providing quality health care to our community. It also shows commitment to the hos- pital in this community, where just a few short years ago, talks of a hospital closure surrounded us all. It is also nice to see that county council recognizes they too have a role in ensuring its residents have access to quality health care. JEFF KELLER, Treasurer South Huron Hospital Association 1 Cancer Society needing drivers By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HURON — The Canadian Cancer Society Huron -Perth Unit is in need of volunteer drivers to take clients to cancer -related appointments. Huron Perth Unit manager Janis Cunningham says most appointments are local, including Exeter, Stratford and London, adding there are occasionally appointments which are farther, but volun- teers do have the choice of not travelling to those particular destinations. "They're mostly local, or London," says Cunningham. Volunteer drivers, depending on the vol- ume of calls, are needed "about once a week, twice a month," says Cunningham. The Huron -Perth Unit is looking for about three or four drivers. Drivers must have a good driving record, a smoke free vehicle must be sensitive to people living with cancer and are available during the week. A screening, interview and training is required.
