Concerns from
Albert Street
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — Albert Street residents in Exeter
have some concerns about certain aspects of a pro-
posed reconstruction of the street, including the
widening of the east side, which would also include the
removal of the trees, boulevard and sidewalk on the
east side.
An open house was held Jan. 24 and residents
attended the Feb. 4 South Huron council meeting to
present their concerns to council.
Resident Jim O'Toole read a report on behalf of
Albert Street landowners.
Residents are in favour of plans for a new road sur-
face, updated services and improved drains and grad-
ing for the street, O'Toole read, but 83 per cent of resi-
dents disagree with widening the road, saying the
street is already wide enough.
Another issue is why only the east side is proposed
for widening. The reason for that is that the hydro
poles are on the west side, and South Huron roads
manager Ken Betties later said a rough estimate on
burying the lines would be $230,000 for the municipal-
ity, plus most of the homes would have to pay for
underground hydro services, something that would
cost $1,500 to $2,000 per household.

Warden brings change to county
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GODERICH — "It's what I always
wanted to do, it's what I love to do.
Next to my family, it's been probably
the greatest thing that ever happened
to me," says Huron County Warden
John Bezaire, who has been in the posi-
tion for only a couple of months.
One of the first tasks Bezaire said the
county has undertaken is looking at
what services it provides and how it
provides them.
"Mainly from a standpoint that our
staffing has ballooned, our budget has
ballooned and I personally believe that
if we haven't already reached the
breaking point, we're getting very very
close.
"People can simply not afford much
more in the way of taxation. So I really
believe we need to get it under con-
trol."
Bezaire said the county wouldn't be
able to get its spending under control
without a comprehensive review and
John Bezaire
that is what it's doing
with its service deliv-
ery review.
"It's going to be a
lengthy process,"
Bezaire said. "We
didn't get here in a
day and we're not
going to get out of
here in a day."
Bezaire said all he
is asking of council
and all that he
expects, for the services it wants to pro-
vide, "is to fund them. Properly budget
for and fund them. Right now, I really
believe we're trying to do too much
with too little."
Bezaire said the decision will have to
be made to either cut services or to
fund them properly but it is premature
to make the decision yet because coun-
cil doesn't have the information to get a
proper picture.
"We've always done everything piece-
meal," said Bezaire. "Something comes
