The guest, Deb O'Hagan, demonstrated the technique of mak- ing scarves by weaving a variety of different coloured yarns through a piece of mesh. The scarves were quite lovely and one was raf- fled off to a member. A delicious Valentine served by Marian Dougall's group. The business portion took place with President Fern Dougall reading a poem and the Institute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect were recited in unison. The roll call was answered by the members showing an example of their favourite crafts. On display were examples of knitting, beeswax can- dles, painted vases, crewel- work, Christmas stockings, quilted pictures and cross- stitch. For example, vigorous exercise just before the test can result in a temporary elevation of cholesterol. Illness, pregnancy and recent surgery can also affect results. So when getting your cholesterol profile done in the lab, dont exercise too much beforehand. A better diet is often part of many people's New Year's resolution. One good example is to eat at least Iwo servings of fish per week. Fatty fish like salmon, herring, mackerel and blue fin tuna have higher amounts of omega-3 oils which are helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease. If you are prone to getting heartburn during the night, try sleeping on your left side. This position decreases the backup of food and acid on the esophagus thus reducing that burning sensation in the chest that can interfere with sleep. Exposure to sunshine does stimulate vitamin D formation in the skin. However, the UVB rays from the sun responsible for this stimulation do not penetrate glass. So sitting in a sunroom will fee good but does nothing for vitamin D production. However, sunburns are caused by UVA rays which are not blocked by glass.
