"Noted!" CD brings women together
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GODERICH — A wide
variety of ages, back-
grounds, experience and
singing styles have been
blended together by the
Huron United way which
has combined the voices
of 17 women to make the
"Noted!" CD.
On the CD are local
singers Marlene Mathers
from Exeter, Megan
Finkbeiner from Crediton
and Christa Ducharme,
Monica Joy and
Elizabeth Levesque from
Zurich.
Other singers on the
recording are: Ashley
Anderson, Suzanne
Daniels, Jenelle Gaynor,
Leisa Hartman, Melina
Hussey, Sarah
Koopmans, Sara
McGregor, Raylene
Rebryna, Kim Souch,
Sara Souch, Judy Sparks
and Jena Ujiye.
"We were very pleased
with both the number
and calibre of the sub-
missions," said
Kimberley Payne,
chairperson of the
"Noted!" steering
committee.
"Originally we
were looking at
filling 10 spots for
the CD but when
the committee lis-
tened to the
recordings and
read the stories of
the women hop-
ing to take part it
was impossible to choose
only 10. Eventually we
were successful in nar-
rowing it down to the
lucky 17 and we couldn't
be more pleased with the
quality, age range and
diverse musical styles
found in the chosen par-
ticipants," Payne
explained.
"We are going to end
up with a phenomenal
CD that does all of Huron
County proud," she
added.
The latest step for the
women was a recent
educational weekend
retreat at Brentwood on
the Beach. Workshops
covering all the aspects
of working as a profes-
sional musician and
recording a CD were cov-
ered during the week-
end. The recording ses-
sions will take place over
a two-week period in
February with the
release of the completed
CD scheduled for early
May.
The "Noted!" project is
grateful for the financial
support of the Mildred
Grimes Trust and Huron
Economic Development
Matters. Project organiz-
ers still need additional
community sponsors to
help cover the costs
involved.
If interested in con-
tributing, contact Payne
at 524-7900.
Marlene Mathers
"Most of my life" is
how long Mathers said
she has been singing. A
few years ago, after
being encouraged by
friends in the music busi-
ness, she
made a
recording of her
music which she
said made her
more open
about her
singing.
The recording
for the
"Noted" CD
is being done
in Arkona at
the `Music
Room' with
each woman
singing individually
and for a group song.
Mathers wrote a
song for the project
called "Legacy of
Love" that all of the
women will be singing.
Mathers says it was a
great experience work-
ing with professional
musicians, including a
pianist. "Normally, I play
piano for myself. It was
exciting to have a profes-
sional pianist play for me
and I could just focus on
singing."
Mathers said she saw
an advertisement for the
Marlen
Mathe
e
rs
album and was encour-
aged to take part by her
friends.
Taking advantage of
the talented women in
Huron County was
the vision of Payne
four years ago,
said Mathers,
since it has been
felt, especially by
graduating high
school students,
that they had to
leave the county to
pursue their
singing careers.
"She wants to
prove otherwise
and do something about
it," said Mathers.
Monica Joy
"It was an experience I
never ever thought
would happen," says Joy
who added she has been
singing for many years.
"But you're still able to
learn some things."
Joy said she read
about the CD in Focus
magazine and was talked
into it by her future
daughter-in-law and
nephew.
Joy did her live taping
in Arkona recently and
says, although she has
made her own cassettes
before, it was her first
time in a professional
setting.
"It's a wonderful
thing," says
Joy who
describes
her style as
"pretty much
country" and
the song she
sang on the
CD was a
gospel song
called "Bless
This House."
"It's a spe-
cial song to me because
I've been singing it for a
lot of years.
"It's a wonderful group
of women...we all joined
together as one, and it's
a real special thing for
Huron County."
Megan Finkbeiner
From Patsy Cline to
Terri Clark, Finkbeiner
has a wide variety of
country singers who
have influenced her and
says she has been
singing since public
school and singing seri-
ously since age 13.
Finkbeiner
says she got
involved in
making the CD
when Exeter
Librarian Jane
Hundey, where
Finkbeiner used
to work, told
her mother
about the pro-
ject.
Finkbeiner,
who was also in
the studio laying down
her track on Tuesday,
sang the song "Magpie,"
which she selected from
a list of possible songs
because she felt it suited
her voice.
"I sing a vari-
ety of stuff,"
says Finkbeiner.
"I sing like Pasty
Cline and Terri
Clark. It all
depends on the
song and the
range."
Finkbeiner,
who is a social
science student
at the University
of Western
Ontario, is also taking
part in the West Idol
competition at the uni-
versity. Taking part in
the making of the CD and
seeing the women who
could play other instru-
ments has also encour-
aged Finkbeiner to think
about learning to play
guitar as well as song
writing.
"We all got along real-
ly well," said Finkbeiner
of the Brentwood week-
end. "At the end of the
day, we'd do a jam ses-
sion and everybody
would sit around and
sing...I think it's a great
experience for every-
one."
Christa Ducharme
A pianist since the age
of nine, Ducharme says it
was an excellent experi-
ence taking part in the
recording and she will be
playing piano on the CD
Mega
Finkb
n
einer
Mo
nica Joy
as well as singing in the
group composition.
"It was a really posi-
tive experience to just
meet other women in our
area...being around them
the whole weekend,
singing and just getting
to know their back-
grounds."
Ducharme
recorded her track
at the Trivitt Church
in Exeter and says
the experience has
given her some
ideas after talking
with the other
women in the
group. "I think I'd
like to pursue it Elizabeth
some point. I just Levesque
want to make sure I
choose the right project."
Although she hasn't
heard anything
about another
recording being
done, Ducharme
says she would
love to do another
one. "All of the
feedback I've
got...it's all been a
great deal of
interest."
"I'm looking
forward to the
recording when
we all get togeth-
er in the studio."
Ducharme also thanks
the committee for putting
together the project. "It
was a once in a lifetime
opportunity."
Elizabeth Levesque
Although she has
never sung professional-
ly, Levesque says she
was picked mostly for
her experience in song -
writing, which she has
been doing for 20 years.
Levesque said she sub-
mitted 13 minutes of
song segments she had
composed and was
helped a lot with her
singing by producer
Louise Fagan. "She
helped me make the
most of them. The whole
program and the week-
end retreat we had really
helped to make the most
of the talents I have."
Levesque says she has
a variety of singing and

songwriting influences
and is singing an "old
fashioned yet modern"
waltz called `Boulder"
which she says is a play
on words.
Levesque said the
experience has been
excellent and
that Fagan
has been a
great inspira-
tion. "I can't
say enough
about how
wonderful
she's been.
The CD itself
is amazing. It
will certainly
be my
favourite CD
and I think a
lot of people's favourite
CD."
