New Crime Stoppers signs
Curbing vandalism — Recently, several businesses stepped up sup-
porting a Crime Stoppers initiative aimed at reducing the vandalism at
local schools. Metal Crime Stoppers signs measuring 12" by 18" were
bought and placed on the exterior of every school within both the Avon
Maitland District School Board and the Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board.Above from left are Crime Stoppers police co-ordinator
Shawn McFalls, Exeter Public School vice-principal Shawn Allen and
Exeter Heartland Community Credit Union manager Rob McVean, rep-
resenting one of the businesses supporting the signs. Crime Stoppers is
hoping the signs will help curb the amount of damage caused annually at
the schools. In addition to this goal, it provides students easy access to
the Crime Stoppers phone number (I -800-222-TIPS [8477])."Very few
of our tips come from students and we'd like that to increase," says
McFalls, adding,"They have a vast knowledge of what is happening within
their community and we'd like to be able to tap into that resource?'
Crime Stoppers is an anonymous program and for information leading to
a crime being solved, tipsters can earn cash rewards of up to $2,000.

Simple steps to heart happiness
(NC)—It's not news that having
bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol)
can hurt your heart and ultimately
lead to heart disease. Statistics show
that 48 per cent of men and
43 per cent of women in
Canada have elevated blood
cholesterol levels, which may
be putting them at risk for
heart disease and stroke.
Research shows that every
• Eat less fat, especially
saturated fat and trans fat.

fat or skim milk dairy products.

one per cent drop in blood choles-
terol reduces the risk of heart dis-
ease by two per cent. A simple way
to reduce LDL cholesterol levels by
up to 10 per cent in just four weeks
is to eat a cereal with psyllium fibre
every day as part of a healthy diet.
Achieving a healthy body weight,
being physically active and control-
ling your cholesterol levels are also
essential for heart health.
The following easy steps will help
improve your heart health and
lower your cholesterol:
• Start your day with a cereal
with psyllium fibre.
• Enjoy a variety of foods from
each of the four food groups in
Canada's Food Guide - empha
size whole grain and bran -based
cereals and breads, other grain
products, vegetables and fruit.
• Increase your intake of fibre -
rich legumes.

Probus hears importance of conservation
By Yvonne Reynolds
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
EXETER — Tim Cumming, communica-
tions specialist with the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA), empha-
sized the vital importance of protecting
both our direct and indirect sources of
water when he spoke to the Exeter
Probus Club in January.
The former journalist (with weeklies in
Port Elgin, Seaforth and Goderich) noted
the ABCA was the first Authority in
Ontario, established in 1946 through the
co-operative efforts of local municipali-
ties to protect and conserve local
resources. It is one of the richest water-
sheds of its size in Canada in terms of
habitat and inhabitants such as fresh
water mussels. The alligator reportedly
visiting the Morrison Dam created some
excitement last year, but is not a pro-
tected species here!
Speaking on "The Power of
Community," Cumming listed past
achievements of the ABCA, how this was
accomplished, and future opportunities
for continued success.
Among the successes is the
MacNaughton Morrison section of the
South Huron Trail. Volunteers were
instrumental in sprucing up our section
of the trail. Their ongoing stewardship
includes picking up litter and reporting
vandalism.
Due to contributions of time and money
from some community -minded people,
those who can't walk the trail can be
transported by a six -seater vehicle,
which replaced the original tractor -
drawn wagon. Seniors are especially
appreciative of this service.
Staff has planted thousands of trees,
the lungs of our planet. Water quality is
continually monitored, with
protection and improvement a
constant goal. Tasks like well
decommissioning and septic
tank pump -outs, carried out by
the Authority, are funded by
the county through the Huron
Clean Water Project, which is
also concerned with erosion
control and livestock fencing.
A Drinking Water Source
Protection Committee under the
aegis of the provincial Clean
Water Act was set up last year
to preserve and protect munici-
pal water sources within the
Ausable and Maitland Valley
watersheds. Working groups
formed in Exeter, Parkhill,
Listowel, Wingham and Clinton
will start next month to focus

Education of the younger generation
involved in agriculture to adopt new
practices is another part of the ABCA's
mandate.
The ABCA is funded by user fees,
grants from local municipalities, federal
and provincial governments, and dona-
tions.
The Exeter Lions Club and the ABC
Foundation sponsor the annual
Conservation dinner and auction, which
raised a "watermark high" of $40,000 a
year for the past two years. Over the last
18 years, this partnership has funded
half a million dollars of conservation
measures.
Cumming emphasized that nothing
could be accomplished without partners.
All success is due to the co-operation
and contributions of individuals, service
clubs and governments at all levels
working with the Authority's dedicated
staff.
Some ways individuals can make a dif-
ference are joining Friends of the South
Huron Trail (which needs more volun-
teers), leaving a local legacy and taking
ownership of our actions. He concluded
by tossing out the challenge: "Consider
the role you might play".
Besides a monthly meeting with a guest
speaker, the Exeter Probus Club sched-
ules an activity. January's, most fitting-
ly, was a tour of the water filtration
plant at Grand Bend.
The club meets in the Primary Room
(rented from the United Church) the
third Wednesday of every month from 10
a.m. to noon. Guests are welcome.
