Capsule Comments

There are many drug interactions identified with
tobacco smoke. This is particularly important when a
person abruptly quits smoking. Because of tobacco's
effect on medications, doses of certain drugs may
have to be reduced when smoking is ceased. Drug
classes affected include some mental health drugs, inhaled insulin and
some antidepressants.
Today we know there is a definite link between high blood pressure and
increased risk of heart attacks. A Harvard physician, Samuel Levine was
first to make that connection in 1929.
Canada leads the industrialized world in marijuana use as a
percentage of the population. A recent U.N. report showed that 16.7% of
Canadians between the ages of 15 and 64 used the drug during the past
year. The countries that beat Canada for this dubious honour were Ghana
(21.5%), Zambia (17.7%) and Papua New Guinea and Micronesia (29%
each). Worldwide average is 3.8%.
During these short winter days, many people suffer from winter
depression characterized by increased fatigue and appetite (esp.
carbohydrate craving), irritability, interpersonal and work difficulties,
decreased energy and that "dragged out" feeling. These are symptoms of
Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by reduced exposure to natural light.
There are special lights available to treat the condition with only 20
minutes per day exposure.
