Attorney general makes stop in Exeter
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — One of the challenges of a minority gov-
ernment is getting legislation passed.
As such, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of
Canada Robert Nicholson admitted during a stop in
Exeter Jan. 16 he needs help from the other parties to
get the Conservatives' Tackling Violent Crimes Act
passed.
The Act proposes: tougher laws on gun crimes, bail
provisions and sexual and violent offenders, further
protection of young persons from sexual exploitation
and fighting impaired driving.
Nicholson, the Conservative MP from Niagara Falls,
was appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney
General in January 2007, and said last week
Canadians want their streets to be safer.
Visiting ETM Television with local federal
Conservative candidate Ben Lobb, Nicholson said,
"People who commit a serious offense with a gun can
expect to go to jail," adding gun crime is a problem in
Canada and the government has to do something
about it.
Referring to the "long gun registry" implemented by
the former ruling Liberals, Nicholson said it is all about
bureaucracy and not about fighting crime.
Nicholson said the Conservatives are "very commit-
ted" to fighting crime.
Referring to crimes like child pornography, Nicholson
said the government has pledged to enhance co-opera-
tion with other countries to tackle Internet crimes. As
technology is changing rapidly, Nicholson said
Canada's Criminal Code has to be continuously updat-
ed.
Part of the proposed Tackling Violent Crimes Act is
changing the age of consent for "non -exploitative sexu-
al activity" from 14 to 16 years of age.
"They need protection," Nicholson said of youths.
Nicholson added drugs are a big problem in Canada.
"We don't want people on drugs. We want to help .. .
Taking drugs is a bad idea. It's a way to screw up your

life," he said adding the Conservatives will be tough
with drug dealers.
Despite the challenges of getting legislation passed in
a minority government, Nicholson told the Times -
Advocate he is still "somewhat optimistic " He said he
believes strongly in the issues his government is talk-
ing about and he receives positive feedback when he
speaks to Canadians. He says he's trying to build
momentum and energy to get things done.
Visiting Huron -Bruce, Nicholson said there are simi-
larities to his riding of Niagara Falls, such as agricul-
ture and tourism. He adds he is impressed with Lobb
and thinks he will make a good candidate.

Strategies to help children grow up healthy
• Increase self-confidence and
self-esteem through a range of
physical and non-physical
activities.
• Value all children for who they are
and what they do, not how they
look.
• Feel proud of your child,
regardless of their size or weight.
• Model love of your child and
yourself regardless of physical
appearance.
• Explain weight gain in puberty as
natural and important for healthy
maturation.
• Treat fat and thin children equally
well.
• Don't make comments about any
one's size or weight, especially as
a "joke".
