HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2008-01-16, Page 1010 Times -Advocate Wednesday, January 16, 2008 Annual meeting for UC on Jan. 28 at Northside United Church By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD - UCW meet- ing: The January meeting of the UCW was held on Tuesday evening with 28 ladies present. The meeting table had the auto- graphed table cloth on it with a bouquet of cut flowers in a hold- er, along with a number of hold- ers with lighted candles in them. Sharon Passmore welcomed everyone and gave the theme "Women of the Bible." Everyone joined in the Litany prayer responsively. The ladies sang the hymn The First Noel with Jean Hodgert at the piano. Anne Kernick read different verses of Scripture from Genesis chapters 2 and 3, giving a medi- tation on them. Women of the Bible Marjorie Johns talked about ladies of the Bible. Sharon Passmore came in dressed as Eve with fig leaves. Marjorie read from Judges 16:15-21 about Delilah and Samson. Anne Kernick read from Genesis about Lot's wife, and Sharon came in dressed as Lot's wife. Anne read from Genesis 6 and 9 about Mrs. Noah, the ark, the dove and the rainbow. Marjorie read about, Mary, Ruth, Mary Magdalene, the widow, Anna, Mary and Martha, Queen Esther, the woman at the well and Solomon. Marjorie gave a reading from "Chicken Soup." Sharon read Luke 13:10-17. Anne read "Baby Lift." Sharon and Anne received the offering with prayer by Marjorie. The ladies sang As With Gladness Men of Old. Anne closed the worship ser- vice with a reading, "A New Year's Wish". Joyce Fulton our president, opened the business part of the meeting with a read- ing "A January Diet." The ladies repeated the U.C.W. Purpose. Marilyn Pym our new secretary took the roll call which was answered by "How did you celebrate the end or the begin- ning of the year?" Marilyn read the minutes and the correspondence. Helen Kadey our new treasurer gave her report. Sharon Lynn gave council report. The annual meeting will be held Jan. 28 in Northside United Church in Seaforth. The meeting closed with the U.C.W. prayer. A delicious lunch of fruit breads, cheese, grapes and beverages prepared by Joan Skinner, Sharon Passmore, Karen Etherington and Carolyn Johns. Funeral lunch committee: Shirley Cooper (contact per- son), Agnes Bray, Jo -Anne Rowe, Pat Ballantyne. Church Service Rev. Judith Ritchie was in charge of the First Sunday after Epiphany church service on Sun., Jan. 13. Rev. Judith lit the Christ candle. Everyone sang the opening hymn Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life. Rev. Judith gave words of wel- come and everyone passed the Peace. The Introit We Praise You For Your Love was sung. Rev. Judith led in the call to worship responsively and the opening prayer in unison. Rev. Judith gave the announcements. Virginia Warwick lit the red candle for Peace. Rev. Judith read the Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 42:1-9 "The Lord's Servant." Rev. Judith told Justin Pym about the baptismal font and remembering Jesus. The Lord's Prayer was sung in unison. Psalm 29 was read responsively. The choir sang Come To My Heart Lord Jesus accompanied by the organist Jean Hodgert. Virginia Warwick read the Gospel Lesson Matthew 2:1-12 "The Baptism of Jesus." The title of Rev. Judith's message was "Living The Light." Everyone sang the hymn Child of Blessing, Child of Promise. Everyone read the Affirmation of Faith A New Creed. John Batten and Sharon Passmore received the offering and everyone sang the Doxology and read the offertory prayer in unison. Rev. Judith gave the prayers "Remembering the Baptism of Jesus." Everyone sang the hymn Guide Me, 0 Thou Great Jehovah. Rev. Judith gave the commis- sioning and pronounced the benediction. Announcements On Sun., Jan. 20 the guest minister will be Rev. Matthew Steven. On Sun., Jan. 27 the guest worship leader will be Dave Williams. The annual reports will be ready Jan. 27. Feb. 3 - Annual meeting will take place at 11:45 a.m. after the church service at 10 a.m. Lunch at 11:15. Lunch will be hosted by the outreach commit- tee with proceeds going towards Camp Bimini and Camp Menesetung. In the UCW news Virginia Warwick will be the visiting per- son for Team 1 and Rhoda Rohde will be for Team 2. If there is anyone sick or hospital- ized please let either lady know. Youth Book Drive ends Friday HURON — The annual Lieutenant Governor's 2008 Aboriginal Youth Book Drive wraps up Friday. After finishing his term as Ontario's 28th Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable David C. Onley announced his commitment to continuing the Aboriginal Youth Literacy initiative that was begun by his immediate predecessor, the Honourable James K. Bartleman. OPP locations throughout the province are accepting brand new children's books up to the Grade 8 reading level. The books will then be col- lected and forwarded to needy Aboriginal communi- ties.
