In a press release, the OPP reminded the public of the dangers of area rivers at this time of year and encour- aged people to stay clear from riverbanks. A tribute page on Facebook has been set up in VanValkengoed's memory. Closure "bad news" Continued from front page Oke said while the high Canadian dollar is a factor in the closing, "It's a symptom, not the cause." Huron County Federation of Agriculture (HCFA) direc- tor -at -large Paul Klopp said the closing means one less option for farmers, "it weakens us all." Klopp said that government has a place to support busi- ness and he hopes something is being done. "That's your job description, to go and shake trees...it definitely doesn't hurt to go and work if your goal is to keep something here. It's amazing how you can get a side to move if you work at it. "For the area, I sure don't want to lose it. Farmers aside, for the workers and what it does to the community." Tim Hudak, MPP for Niagara West-Glanbrook, and Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford and PC Agriculture Critic, called on Premier Dalton McGuinty last week to help save the jobs of nearly 300 plant workers at CanGro Foods Inc. and the livelihoods of countless farmers in Niagara. The plant closures will affect far more than the plant employees, Hudak and Hardeman warned. "Much like the closure of the Cadbury Schweppes plant this summer in St. Catharines, which created a crisis among Niagara's juice grape growers, the closure of the CanGro plant in Niagara will also send a ripple effect through the local agriculture industry, where many local farmers supply produce to the plant," Hudak and Hardeman wrote in a co-signed letter to the premier. Agency in cash crisis Continued from front page BBBSSH started 28 years ago and serves parts of Huron, Lambton, Middlesex and Perth counties. There were 80 matches between children and adults in 2007. Demand for the services the agency offers has increased, a press release states, and there is a waiting list for children in need. Monk said the agency needs to look at how it does business and how it raises money. BBBSSH has an $80,000 annual budget and its request for immediate donations to help it start up again is part of a campaign to raise $75,000 to get the agency back on its feet. Board secretary and former Big Sister Laurie Mackechnie said, "Our mission is to strengthen our community through mentoring programs that encour- age individual potential in children and youth. We've got a great team of community volunteers who donate countless hours as Big Brothers, Big Sisters, in -school mentors and the Big Bunch Program for children on a waiting list for matches." Donations can be made by cheque to Box 113, Exeter, Ont., NOM 1S0. Donations by credit card can be made through the agency's website at www.shbbbs.com For more information, call the agency office at 235- 3307. Once inside the front door, a lofty foyer with an 11 -foot ceiling hints at the open feeling that is a major featu e of this home, where all the other rooms have nine -foot ceilings. The foyer leads into the great room, which combines with the kitchen and dining room to make one expansive open area that is sure to be the hub of all family activities. The great room itself is designed to suit its occupants all year round. In winter, a gas fireplace flanked by an entertainment unit will make this room a cosy focal point. In summer, a door opening out to a covered deck and the sun deck beyond will expand the living area and offer an ideal spot for al fresco activities. A half -wall neatly divides the great room from the kitchen, which has a central island with a breakfast bar, as well as a large walk-in pantry to provide storage for canned and dry goods, plus a phone desk—a feature that homeowners find invaluable. Superbly designed, the dining area is set into a bay with windows on three sides that overlook the sun deck and the back garden. The master suite has its own door to the vast sun deck that stretches across the width of the house at the rear. The second and third bedrooms are situated on either side of the foyer.
