WRIGHT
Gordon Alexander Wright passed away November 15, 2001
at Simcoe Village Manor, Beeton, Ontario. He was 96.
Gord, the eldest child of a family of three of the late
Robert James and Annie (Stewart) Wright, was born
January 18, 1911 on their farm near Cromarty in
Hibbert Township, Perth County. As a young lad he
attended S.S. #7 Hibbert school, with the Cooper,
Dinnin, and Venner families, before heading off to
Seaforth Collegiate, graduating in 1929. During this time,
in 1927, the Wright family had moved to a farm north of
Kippen on Highway #4. While attending school in Seaforth,
with A.Y. McLean as a classmate, Gord and neighbour Lloyd Workman
boarded with the Butt family, and he soon developed into a top track and field competitor.
He credited his science teacher, Neil Bissonnette with introducing him to the Western Roll
for high jumping—a technique that helped him, in his first year at Ontario Agricultural
College in Guelph, to break John Kenneth Galbraith's record, and set a new 11 -year record.
Gord also excelled at wrestling, football, and gymnastics, and qualified for the Canadian
wrestling team for the 1936 Olympics, but was declared ineligible to participate as he was
teaching phys-ed at his first teaching job in Schumacher, Ontario. He did, however, attend
as a spectator.
Gord was married in 1939 to Ruth Baker, daughter of one of his professors at
Guelph. During the Second World War, he served overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy.
from 1947 to 1962, Gord was Director of Physical and Health Education for Ontario, and
was instrumental in setting up youth leadership camps at Bark Lake and Lake Couchiching
during this time, and in the formation of the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic
Association (OFSAA). He was appointed in 1962 as Canada's first Director of Fitness and
Amateur Sport under the Diefenbaker government, but when the govemment changed the
following year, he returned to his teaching career as vice-principal at Banting Memorial
High School in Alliston, where he later became principal from 1969 until his retirement in
1914. The G. A. Wright Athletic Field at Banting Memorial was named in his honour.
Gord and Ruth soon became involved in Alliston's community activities, helping to
found the Alliston Potato Festival and the Sir Frederick Banting Educational Committee. As
a direct result of their dedicated work with this committee, a bylaw was ratified just days
before Gord passed away, to protect the Sir Frederick Banting homestead at Alliston. In
2001, at age 90, Gord wrote "Leadership—Beyond the Playing Field" with journalist Kathryn
Mooij of Beeton, the story of a remarkable educator, champion athlete, and first-class citi-
zen, who never forgot his roots and lessons learned as a farm boy in southwestern Ontario.
This book, and his life, were dedicated to encouraging youth to use athletics to develop
leadership skills.
Gord is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Alec and John, four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. In this area, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Esther Wright of Hensall,
and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter Carol
(2000), brother Frank (1965), and sister and brother-in-law Laurabelle (2006) and Orland
Reichert (2004). A small family and Legion service was held on December 1, 2007 at the
Simcoe Village Manor, but a public memorial service to celebrate Gord's life is planned for
Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the Alliston Legion from 2 to 5 p.m. Donations may be
made to the Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation, 2 John Ave., Alliston, Ontario, L9R
1J8. To share your special memory of Gord, view an album or read a more detailed
obituary, please visit: http://www./reewebs.com/gawright
