As we start another new year, it's a good time to
mention some of the new medical projects being
worked on around the world. For example an artificial
lung is currently in animal trials. Eventually it will be
used as an aid prior to and after lung transplantation
to ensure the new lung functions well.
New drugs are always being discovered for various cancers and HIV.
New breakthroughs are occurring in the treatment of various forms of
leukemia extending the survival of those afflicted with these types of
cancer.
The game manufacturer, Nintendo, has a computer game called Brain
Age 2 which helps give aging brains a boost through mental training
exercises that help keep the brain agile and promotes mental sharpness.
The Canadian government has set new goals for smoking cessation.
Right now, 5 million Canadians are smokers, about 19 per cent of the
population. The goal for 2011 is to have this number drop to 12 per cent.
Part of this goal is to reduce the incidence of smokers in the 15-17 age
group from 15 per cent to only 9 per cent..
2008: A new year, a new beginning and a great chance to start taking
charge of our own health. We would love to join you in that goal. Let our
pharmacists be on your good health team.
