The scripture reading was from John 10, and the message was entitled "The Good Shepherd." Carolyne Walden lit the Christ candle. Time was shared with the young people of the congregation. UCW Unit 3 hosted the muffin social before the service. The annu- al meeting is scheduled for Feb. 4 following the church service. St. Paul's Anglican At St. Paul's Anglican church in Kirkton on Epiphany Sunday, Jan. 6, Rev. Dalice Sim celebrated the Holy Eucharist. The message was Enjoy a 'poor boy lunch' Jan. 25 EXETER - Happy New Year to everyone! Our 'Poor Boy Lunch' on Jan. 25 is fast approaching. It goes from 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. at Exeter United Church. Cost is $6 and tickets are available from any Rebekah. Plans were dis- cussed for our visit to Stratford Lodge on Feb. 19 when the presi- dent of the Rebekah Assembly will make her official visit. We will open the meeting. There will be a guest speaker before the meeting on Jan. 16 so you are asked to arrive before 7:45 p.m. That same evening we will discover who our secret sisters for the past year have been and we will draw new names for 2008. Support fair fundraising By Liz Sangster HENSALL CORRESPONDENT HENSALL - At Hensall United Church, service began with an organ pre- lude, welcome and announcements, and the passing of the Peace. The minister was Rev Keith Lewis, his sermon was "Pushing Ahead for Jesus". Vern and Mona Alderdice were the greeters. Cecil Pepper was the reader and can- dle -lighter. The ushers were Pat Veal and Donna Smale. Betty Simmons looked after the nursery. The service closed with commissioning, benedic- tion, and choral amen. The next meeting of the Hensall South Huron Agricultural Society will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16 in the auditorium of Hensall Arena. Plans for the 140th Annual Hensall Spring Fair will be dis- cussed. For this special occasion, the Fair Board is selling fundraising tickets at a cost of $10 each. There are two draws each month, with the grand prize of $500 to be drawn at the fair on Fri., June 13. Tickets are available from board members, or at the Klip N Kurl in Hensall. Come out and enjoy the new year with a January meal at the Hensall Drop - In on Jan. 17 at the Hensall United Church. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. Following lunch, we will be hearing from Keith Lewis. Come on out for the fellowship and great food. We welcome all local individuals to this luncheon. The cost is $6 per person. Andy Meinen was the minister. His message was "Dwelling In God's House". Dorothy Taylor was the organist with Al Hoggarth and Harry Moir receiving the offering. Several familiar hymns were sung. This course is specifically designed for the person with little to no Bible knowledge, no church affiliation, but an interest to learn what's inside the best selling book in the history of the world. For example an artificial lung is currently in animal trials. Eventually it will be used as an aid prior to and after lung transplantation to ensure the new lung functions well. New drugs are always being discovered for various cancers and HIV. New breakthroughs are occurring in the treatment of various forms of leukemia extending the survival of those afflicted with these types of cancer. The game manufacturer, Nintendo, has a computer game called Brain Age 2 which helps give aging brains a boost through mental training exercises that help keep the brain agile and promotes mental sharpness. The Canadian government has set new goals for smoking cessation. Right now, 5 million Canadians are smokers, about 19 per cent of the population. The goal for 2011 is to have this number drop to 12 per cent. Part of this goal is to reduce the incidence of smokers in the 15-17 age group from 15 per cent to only 9 per cent.. 2008: A new year, a new beginning and a great chance to start taking charge of our own health.
