A public meeting for the rezoning of the property was held at Monday night's South Huron council meet- ing. The land in question is 3.7 acres on Highway 4 at the south end of Exeter across from Huron Motor Products. The land is owned by Gerald and Jeanette McBride and is part of a larger 65.73 acre parcel of property also owned by the McBrides (the western portion of the land is slated for residential develop- ment eventually). The Honda parcel is to be rezoned Highway Commercial — Special Provisions and severed so Honda can buy the property and build a 16,000 square foot building on a dealership to be called Exeter Honda Powerhouse, which will sell new and used Honda cars, motorbikes, ATVs, jet skis, power equipment and lawnmowers. But at Monday night's council meeting, concerns were expressed about the property. Planner Claire Dodds said the municipal engineer has expressed con- cern that the property in question is "a major overland flooding route and any development in this location would severely impact stormwater flow. A sanitary sewer easement and municipal drain also runs .. . through the property. Efforts to control stormwater on the property would be costly and would affect the development of the property." It was recommended that Honda have a preliminary stormwater management report done for the property before the zoning bylaw be approved. Hardy comes to South Huron with experience in the CAO's position, having held that role in Thames Centre for about two years, where he told the Times -Advocate last week he did a lot of work on economic development. TORONTO — The local economy was hit with bad news as CanGro Foods announced Tuesday morning it will sell or close its Exeter and St. Davids, Ont. vegetable and fruit processing plants by March 31. The announcement was made late Tuesday morning as the Times - Advocate was going to press. Between both the Exeter and St. Davids plants, up to 268 hourly and 27 salaried positions as well as all seasonal positions may be eliminated. "These actions follow CanGro's 2006 Chambly, Quebec, vegetable plant closure as CanGro will now shift to outsourcing its canned vegetable and fruit requirements," said CanGro Foods operations vice-president David Hoyles. In a press release, the company said employees, all of whom are repre- sented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 175, will be treated fairly, consistent with all applicable laws, company policy and the collective agreement.
