Lucan Irish edge Mitchell Hawks 4-3
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish
finished their 2007 sched-
ule with a pair of 4-3 deci-
sions as the Irish edged the
Mitchell Hawks Dec. 21 in
Mitchell before the Irish
came out on the short end
of a 4-3 score Dec. 23 in
North Middlesex.
The Mt. Brydges Bulldogs
continue to lead the league
with 46 points with the
Thamesford Trojans in sec-
ond at 42 points while the
Irish have a 11-15-1 record
for 23 points.
Delhi leads the McConnell
conference with 40 points.
After Mitchell took a 1-0
lead in the first period Dec.
21, Justin Lightfoot and
Ryan Clarke put the Irish
ahead 2-1 in the second
period.
But the Hawks tied it just
20 seconds later and took
the lead again in the first
minute of the third period.
Alex Regan tied it at three
with eight minutes left in
the game forcing an over-
time with neither team able
to score, sending the game
to a shootout.
Tyler Medd, Larry
Northover and Regan were
unable to score for the
Irish with Mitchell unable
to score on its four chances
before Nick Engel's goal on
Lucan's fourth chance gave
the win to the Irish.
Dec. 23 in North
Middlesex, the Stars were
ahead 3-1 after the first
period with Bob Martin get-
ting the Irish on the board
in the last minute of the
period.
The Stars extended their
lead to 4-1 with the lone
goal of the second period
before Chris Van Kasteren
and Martin cut the lead to
4-3 in the third.
It was all Lucan could get
as the Stars hung on for the
4-3 win.
Lucan has two games this
week starting tonight
(Wednesday) when they
host Exeter at 7:45 p.m.
Lucan travels to Central
Elgin Saturday at 8:15 p.m.

Awards aim to recognize
the outstanding achieve-
ments and significant con-
tributions coaches have
made to both their sport
and athletes in Ontario.
The selection of recipi-
ents is based on their
unique contribution to
sport through continuous
development.
The awards do not
reflect the accomplish-
ments of a coach in any
one-year rather the award
is designed to recognize
the contributions a coach
has made over a period of
years.
There are four cate-
gories of awards which
refer to the type of athlete
the coach is primarily
responsible for.
In each category both
males and female coaches
will be recognized.
• Recreational grass
roots;
• Developmental;
• School sport [selected
by OFSAA];
• High performance.
The awards will be pre-
sented at an evening
reception at the Ontario
Coaches Conference on
Feb. 23.

To be eligible for an
Ontario Coaching
Excellence Award, a coach
must coach amateur ath-
letes and have a minimum
of two years coaching
experience in Ontario.
The nominated coach

8-6 for Hawks
EXETER - Three goals in the
final eight minutes lifted the
Exeter Hawks to an 8-6 win Dec.
21 over the visiting Thamesford
Trojans before the Hawks were
doubled 4-2 in North Middlesex
Dec. 22.
The Bulldogs continue to lead
the league with 46 points with
the Thamesford Trojans in sec-
ond at 42 points while the Hawks
have a 9-16-1 record for 19
points.
Delhi leads the McConnell con-

The Trojans took a 3-1 lead by
the end of the first period as they
outshot Exeter 18-
11 with Jake
Jeffrey getting
the lone goal for
the Hawks in
the period.
The teams
traded six goals in
the wild second period
with the Trojans out -
shooting Exeter 19-12
▪ but the outso-
• cred the visitors
4-2 with Josh Wood getting two
and Brandon Dymond and Jeffrey
each adding one for a 5-5 tie
going into the third period.
The Trojans again took the lead
early the final period but two
more goals from Wood at 12:45
and 17:05 put the Hawks ahead
to stay before Dymond sealed the
win at 19:43.
The Trojans outshot the Hawks
49-37 and went 1-8 with the man
advantage while Exeter convert-
ed three of their four chances on
the power play with Wood getting
one of his four goals while the
Hawks were shorthanded.
But Dec. 22 in North Middlesex,
the Hawks were down 2-0 after
the first period on the way to the
4-2 lose as Justin Young and
Wood scored one each in the
remaining two periods in the los-
ing cause.
The Hawks went scoreless in
five chances with the man advan-
tage while the Stars went two for
eight on the power play.
The Hawks have three games
this week starting tonight
(Wednesday) when they visit
Lucan at 7:45 p.m. Exeter hosts
West Lorne Friday at 8:30 p.m.
before travelling Sunday for an
8:30 p.m. game.
