ORGANIZATION: Mayor of the
Municipality of South Huron
KEN
OKE
2008 WILL BE A YEAR OF: Exciting growth
in South Huron
WHY? South Huron is an ideal location far enough
away from the cities to be a place of rural living and
close enough to enjoy all the amenities that the city
life has to offer for your enjoyment. South Huron
supplies infrastructure for modern living as well as
for future expansion.
Exeter and Huron Industrial Park have areas for
new commercial and industrial growth. We had new
companies looking in 2007 and hopefully some of
those companies might move here in 2008.
A variety of residential living is available with full
utilities whether you like town or village living. First
class services are supplied at a reasonable cost by a
staff of municipal employees second to none.
South Huron is a great place to live, to work and to
play. Some have moved here in 2007 and I think
more will move to South Huron in 2008.
THE COMING YEAR'S CHALLENGES
AND HOW TO MEET THEM?:
The Canadian dollar might be a challenge, but
there is not too much we can do about that. Any type
of growth takes a lot of red tape and municipal staff
have been trained to minimize the agony of going
through this hassle.

lowed by a council meeting

ORGANIZATION: President/Chief Executive Officer,
Chief Nursing Executive
South Huron Hospital Association (SHHA)
2008 WILL BE A YEAR OF: Thanks, celebration
and challenges
WHY? 2008 will see the Emergency Room renova-
tions complete, allowing staff and physicians to pro-
vide care in a safe environment. SHHA will celebrate
the major improvements to technology and equip-
ment that were so required with thanks to our
boards, campaign committee members and most
important the generous donors. We will continue to
provide safe quality care, working with our commu-
nity and regional partners to ensure access to care.
THE COMING YEAR'S CHALLENGES AND HOW TO
MEET THEM?:
The shortage of physicians and health care
providers (in particular nurses) remains a persistent
challenge and concern. Without health care
providers, SHHA will be challenged to provide care.
We continue to work diligently to recruit and retain
our valued physicians and staff and your support for
these activities is needed. Our human assets are our
strength.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: On behalf of the staff,
physicians and board of directors, a sincere appreci-
ation and thank you for your generous support
toward the hospital capital campaign. We are truly
honored by the positive responses that have made
the campaign a success.
Everyone made a huge cir-
cle around the sanctuary of
the church and each person
had a candle which was lit
and everyone sang Silent
Night.
Rev. Judith gave the com-
missioning and the benedic-
tion. The choral benediction
of Joy to The World was sung
which brought a wonderful
service to a close.
POLICE BRIEF
Police assaulted
SOUTH HURON — On
December 22 at about 4:30
a.m., police were called to a
structure fire on Main Street
South in Exeter.
Upon arrival officers found all
the tenants were standing on
Main Street and the South
Huron Fire Department was
attempting to clear the upper
level apartments. All apart-
ments were cleared by fire per-
sonnel, with the exception of
one. The door had to be kicked
in and once inside it was deter-
mined the source of the smoke
was inside the apartment.
A male was located passed
out on his couch. He was upset
that fire and police were in his
apartment and was refusing to
leave the building. The male
was removed with force from
the dangerous situation and
taken outside. The male contin-
ued to fight with police and
attempted to assault an officer.
He was arrested and taken to
the South Huron Hospital to be
treated for smoke inhalation.
A 44 -year-old South Huron
man will appear in Exeter
Court Feb. 28 to answer to one
count of "Assault Police."

2008 WILL BE A YEAR OF: Recognizing new reali-
ties
WHY?
• Coping with a high Canadian dollar in a
global trading community
• Dealing with aging infrastructure
- roads, bridges, water, sewers, etc.
• Reconsidering Canada's place in world
trade negotiations
• Review of our foreign policy
THE COMING YEAR'S CHALLENGES
AND HOW TO MEET THEM?: Collectively,
Canadians need to a look inwardly and determine
what it is to be Canadian, for example our health
care system and our many social support programs.
Surely when we consider Canada's many universal
benefits as compared with the U.S.A., we would
want to buy Canadian. We must cease the notion
that tax reductions are our way to the future.
Reductions to GST would better have been put to
building infrastructure. Put an end to the free trade
deal with Korea. Buy Canadian, identify in labelling
what that means. Go back to our Canadian conven-
tions - not USA directives, as we see our way for-
ward.
